[edit] Userbox and template coment

Image choice is OK. I thought an amp/pedal combo might look good...and...also contrast the main project boxes...but an amp pic loses clarity when shrunk down into the boxes. I noticed that the template says Equipment and the userbox says Equipments? Should the userbox lose the 's'? My other thought is...even with the pics....the title "WikiProject Equipment" is a little vague. But, in the case of the Userbox anyways, "WikiProject Guitar Equipment"....is a little long. I'll paste alt-title/alt-pic versions below to show the difference.

Some thoughts

Sorry I am late to respond to this. I think you are off to a good start with the project banner. I like the graphics. I wanted to throw something on the table to think about, though. Instead of making this another WikiProject, how about making it a task force of the WikiProject Guitarists? In doing this, I think the project banner would be altered somewhat. It would still be the Guitarist banner, but maybe another section would be added with the "amp" or "pedal" graphic that reads, "This article is supported by the Guitar Equipment task force".

Consider how the Military history WikiProject does it, here: Talk:War_of_the_Austrian_Succession. As you can see, the banner is that of the Military history WikiProject, although it falls into the task force they have set up for French military history. What do you think? I would be willing to re-organize the main project page to include this task force and possibly make room for others. --Aguerriero (talk) 14:59, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Amp infobox suggestions

Of the top of my head (no pun intended), an amp infobox would probably include things like:

  1. name, manufacturer, and period, obviously
  2. Type (Head, cabinet, or combo- assuming we consider all these "amps" for our purposes)
  3. pre-amp type (tube or solid state) and power amp type (also tube or solid state)
  4. number of channels
  5. wattage
  6. number and size (maybe brand?) of speakers

The list looks good to me; in fact, I recently put something like this on the Wikipedia:Requested templates page, but it never got done and has been deleted from that list. How can I get this template created? Should I resubmit my request? JSC ltd 20:45, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Despite them not being actual equipment, might I suggest that articles like flanging and distortion (guitar) be included in the scope of the taskforce? --Ortzinator 14:57, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello. The WikiProject Council is currently in the process of developing a master directory of the existing WikiProjects to replace and update the existing Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. The Marshall Amplification article is in very bad shape. It need references and a good clean-up. Does anyone have any ideas how we could get this started? I can't find many references, does anyone know where we could find some? A list of current and discontinued products would also be nice. Please reply here or on my talk page. I stumbled across this one by accident. It's not a front page name, guitar wise, so it probably doesn;t get many hits. If any of you Equipment PRoject members are looking for a project... here you go. It is likely the worst POV skewed guitar hardware related article in all Wikipedia. [edit] Guitar model articles

Editor Anger22 recently brought up the fact that many of the articles we have for individual guitar models are completely inane and almost empty. A lot of them have 1-2 sentences and an infobox. Please, do not create all these articles if you have no intention of fleshing them out. If you spot them, merge any useful content into the main article for that manufacturer and redirect the article.

[edit] Audio clips for equipment?

I also posted this on the Guitar Portal noticeboard, but here seems more appropritate. I think it it would be very useful to have audio clips for all the articles that are about gear-related topics, such as effects pedals, distortion, guitar amplifiers, etc. I think these would be most effective if someone recorded a short dry clip using a direct box and then having various members re-amp that clip through different rigs, so that the variance due to playing style and the guitar itself is minimized and the tonal contribution of that particular piece of gear is maximized. I think it would be better if the clip wasn't a song but instead a series of short exercises that employ the most commonly used playing techniques (strumming chords, arpeggiation, single-note runs, double stops, bends, palm mutes, etc), so the user can hear how that piece of gear interacts with that playing technique. I guess it would be best if we standardized on a microphone too - we should probably use the Shure SM57 since it is in such widespread use for this application. What do people think about this idea?
