The result of the debate was PROMOTED Immediately: O'Hare International Airport, Field Museum of Natural History, Richard J. Daley. Chicago 'L' & Frank Lloyd Wright will be promoted after WP:CHICAGO article totals of 12000 and 12500 are reached respectively.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:07, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Over the next week or two we are accepting votes for articles to be promoted to Category:Top-importance Chicago articles from the list above. There is no set date that voting will end, but it will certainly extend past the date of the Wikipedia:Meetup/Chicago 2 so attendees can vote. Voting will conclude at the end of the day on September 4, 2007. Please keep the Priority_scale above in mind when voting. Since we will probably be promoting 4 articles list your 4 choices in order below (place newest comments at the top) We will total votes with 5 pts for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd and 1 for 4th:
Due to the good turn out the top 5 from this vote will eventually be promoted. The first 3 places will be promoted immediately. The 4th will be promoted after we pass 12000 articles and the 5th after we pass 12500 articles. When we get to around 14000 we will consider promoting another 5.

The result of the debate was PROMOTED: Aaron Montgomery Ward, George Pullman and Harold Washington TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:48, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Now that there are 9000+, I would like to see Harold Washington promoted to Top. Also, please consider former mayor Richard J. Daley, as his policies and actions shaped the city in innumerable ways. In fact, I'd rather see Daley made Top than Washington, but he's not even on the list. Speciate 02:41, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
I am personally inclined to pick Aaron Montgomery Ward and Frank Lloyd Wright. Ward's importance became apparent to me while researching the Historic Michigan Boulevard District. Wright's importance needs little explanation. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 17:13, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
As a non-Chicagoan and given the parameters of top importance classification, I have the view that top-importance articles should showcase Wiki-Chicago and this will only occur if we mark them as top importance and they are written well. In terms of articles related to Chicago then I would say this usually occurs by a reverse discovery. What I mean by this is that most readers (other than for very obvious articles like Al Capone, Great Chicago Fire, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Blackhawks etc) will choose an item of interest and accidently find out that the content has a strong link to Chicago. So Frank Lloyd Wright; George Pullman; Sears, Roebuck and Company; Muhammad Ali; & Donald Rumsfeld are the type of articles I would choose for top. Given I only get a choice of two - I pick George Pullman & Sears, Roebuck and Company at this time.--VS talk 23:50, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

The result of the debate was PROMOTED: Al Capone, Great Chicago Fire TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 04:19, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Muhammad Ali lived/lives on the south side of Chicago (for decades, I think). Since he was/is "the most famous man in the world" [1], and since the current article does not mention much about his Chicago connection, he should join Michael Jordan in Top. Speciate 00:18, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- My suggestion the MA be Top was predicated on the idea that his Chicago connection is being given short shrift. If that can be corrected, then there is no need. But, I'm afraid I don't know much about where he lived, especially if it has to be citable. Speciate 22:53, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
I believe the Great Chicago Fire and Al Capone should be (Top). When people from foreign countries talk about Chicago, they make "bang bang" noises in reference to Capone, and the fire is one of the stars in the Chicago Flag, and remade the city. Speciate 23:13, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Union Stock Yards
High probability that non-Chicagoans would look this up, and I think it had a significant impact on non-Chicagoans: The Jungle, and the social/dietary changes that resulted from the meatpacking and transport industries. Tom Harrison Talk 20:00, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - I don't think it rises to the level of Top. High, certainly. In terms of impact outside Chicago, the Haymarket Riot was far more influential. Billions of communists used to celebrate May Day as a result, maybe they still do in China. Speciate 21:53, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

- I agree the book is important, but it might be better to have a broader survey of the meatpacking industry (not necessarily the stockyards, which I nominated above). I don't know the city like many of you do, and haven't really looked at all the articles we have and how they are related, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. Tom Harrison Talk 20:08, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Strong support: disagree about lack of cross-generational impact, citing the fact that it is assigned in many high school English classes (I read it first in high school) and the fact that the novel still impacts life today because of the changes that occurred in the American food and drug industry, largely because of it. - Support Daley's article could use a lot of improvement. His powerful machine (and ghost voters, some will say--with good evidence) won/stole the 1960 Presidential election for JFK. He was responsible for the 1968 Democratic Convention/Police Riot, which likely caused the loss of the White House for the Dems, allowing "Tricky Dick" Nixon to win. He first was elected by the African-American vote, but later resisted desegregation and Martin Luther King, Jr. He built the horrendous high-rise public housing projects that his son has spent a decade knocking down. He ruled over Chicago (and Cook County) with an iron fist for two decades, and had something to do with just about every feature of the current city, good and bad. Speciate 23:51, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Neutral I am a little unsure about his importance to non-Chicagoans. I am not sure if it rises to top status. However, I think he is an important enough subject to be a nominee. I will certainly have trouble voting for him as a nominee over more nationally prominent individuals, but do believe he may warrant consideration. TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:49, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Donald Rumsfeld
I think we should knock Donald Rumsfeld down to High to make room. Speciate 20:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- His association with Chicago is peripheral. Yes, he was from Wilmette, and he was CEO of Searle in Skokie for a couple of years, but he has had little impact on Chicago or people's perceptions of Chicago. His fall from power was irrelevant to Chicago. In a perfect world he would be Mid. Speciate 17:48, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- You are neglecting the most important reason why he is associated with the project with a strong priority/importance assessment. The following comes directly from his WP article:
| “ | he was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Illinois' 13th congressional district in 1962, at the age of 30, and was re-elected by large majorities in 1964, 1966, and 1968. | ” |
-
- I do not know the geography of the 13th district in the 60's but since he is associated with the northern suburbs by categorical reference (Category:New Trier High School alumni, Category:People from Evanston, Illinois, and Category:People from Winnetka, Illinois), I assume he probably served these regions then. Essentially, he would be a former high who went on to greater roles and succeeded (measured by duration of tenure and repeated engagements). I think his national roles are an extension of his local roles in this context. Your opinion is welcome. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I just don't see why this particular Congressman and cabinet member gets to be Top. He is simply not important enough nor influenced Chicago in particular to be Top. By way of counter-example, Abe Lincoln would be Top for Illinois.
Harold Washington and both Mayor Daleys should be Top before Rumsfeld gets to be Top for Chicago. Speciate 18:50, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Personally, I think Abe Lincoln is a mess, which is why it is a WP:FFA. His talk page, which is not a part of such consideration is representative of this. WP Kentucky lists him as top for some reason although I don't think he ever served them. WP Illinois and WP Presidents don't list priorities for him. I think he would be top for Illinois. I am not familiar with his influence when he had a Chicago role in the 60's, but infer it from his electoral success and subsequent roles. I have to rethink whether a cabinet member should be top because he is not bringing money back to Illinois like a Congressman. However, the only other voice in the voting we have seems to concur that Rumsfeld is a good choice. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:22, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that Rumsfeld's association with Chicago is periphery at best, everything anyone would look him up for he did elsewhere. As for Abe, he was born in Kentucky and lived there for seven years as a child, maybe they have their own criteria too. IvoShandor 13:42, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

- My nickel's worth - Donald Rumsfeld is of top importance at this time to non-Chicagoans because of his duties with regards Iraq his article and is a must have for this encyclopedia. If another project picked him up as Top importance then we would not have too but for now his link to Chicago and thus our pursuit of the information on his article page is very important. 5 years from now - well probably not but for now yes.

- Another nickel's worth - this may have been discussed before - but why are we so concerned that only 0.2% of articles are of top importance. I am a part of three other projects that do not put these restrictions in play. So if its not absolutely set in concrete why can't it be raised to say half of one percent - which would allow for 44-45 articles at Top in the current 8939 on Chicago?--VS talk 07:11, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
