[edit] Merging of Kenmore Square and Fenway-Kenmore
There already is an article called Back Bay Fens, Kenmore Square, Back Bay which encompass much of this in formation – Fenway-Kenmore should either be merged with Back Bay or Kenmore Square.
[edit] Joining Project
I'm going to lend my efforts to the project and see how I can help. The article Forest Hills, Boston is a recent example of my work and it shows that I like to use lots of pictures and lots of references (it doubtlessly also shows that I do make typos!) I'm going to look at the Fenway-Kenmore issue closely...Most likely, that article should end up as a stub/disambiguation directing to both Kenmore Square and a new article called "Fenway, Boston" or something. There is already a Fenway (disambiguation) and I created a page called The Fenway the other day (like the Back Bay Fens article you mention, my Fenway article is about the Emerald Necklace link specifically). Fenway by itself links to Fenway Park.
However, seeing the shape that articles like Mattapan are in, I may set my priorities towards articles of that ilk first. BTW, my user page has a big list of the articles I have done about Boston as well as others...many of them could use another proofread and to be added to other categories. Best Wishes. ◄HouseOfScandal► House of Scandal 20:17, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Welcome aboard House of Scandal, I placed a template on Forst Hills I am not assigning anything above a class B but I would like to get a few articles up for review to get to GA. Possibly Forest Hills, Boston could be one of those canidates. Markco1 13:23, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Jamaicaway
You asked if I needed help on the Jamaicaway article. Although it might benefit from a proofread or a tweaking, I think the length and amount of content is about right, especially since it is just a road, Mr. Olmsted's involvement not withstanding. I am polishing off a couple medieval literature articles this morning but I'll do at least some on Mattapan this afternoon. I will do something for NEHGS very soon as well; I know it inside and out. Finally, thanks for your proposal to try to get the Forest Hills, Boston article above B-rating; that would be cool. ◄HouseOfScandal► House of Scandal 15:52, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Boston molasses disaster
Just finished cleaning up Boston molasses disaster Can someone nominate this for GA? - If someone could nominate it atGood article candidates it would be our first article to go to GA. Thanks all. Markco1 04:42, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Per your request, Boston molasses disaster has been added to the nomination list. As I may have said, don't know if I can do anything to Forest Hills, Boston - while there's always room for improvement, I think that apple is as polished as I can get it. Also, I am a bit disappointed that my "do you know?" candidate (Do you know...Shreve, Crump & Low, the oldest jeweler in North America, opened across the street from Paul Revere and has built such prestigious trophies as the Davis Cup and the Cy Young Award?) has been overlooked in favor of another article about an obscure Hindu mathematician and several other articles which seem to strike less surely at the stated "do you know?" editorial policy of chosing articles with "hooks" that have a wide range of interest. As such, I'm not much in the mood to try to woo the Wikipedia powers-that-be. In fact, I feel a bit more like Achillies sulking in his tent.◄HouseOfScandal► 14:10, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- I put what I think the article needs on it's talk page. I think the information is great - Just thought that Topic headline felt like a catch all. I suggested the following. If you think that I am out of line then I will submit today. Let me know.
- Remove Topic headline – this feels like a catchall and create the following
History
-
- subcats(if any)
- subcats(if any)
Places of interest
-
- Subcats
- Subcats
Education - include comments about overall education system
-
- Schools
- Schools
Transportation
Keep Notes - References - and Bibliography.
[edit] Images Deleted
Man why do they keep deleted your images - Are these your images IE - You took the pictures. If so we should be able to keep them just need to release them with GDLF (self made) in the Licensing pulldown. It took me forever to figure out how to keep my images from being deleted. Markco1 15:41, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- No, they aren't photos I made myself. My understanding on proper tags was imperfect and I think its within their rights to delete them. I get your point about the headings on Forest Hills, Boston. I may turn back to Boston topics later this weekend. Non-Boston topics (Antoine de La Rochefoucauld, Castletownroche, Eamonn an Chnuic, London Metropolitan Orchestra) have been my lastest contributions. ◄HouseOfScandal►

[edit] Taken Articles to GA
Would like to take an Article to GA - I tried with Boston molasses disaster but it failed GA. I think we can take another pass at it in a bit. But I would like us to as a group nominate a B article for push to GA and get it done. Markco1 04:30, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Regarding Boston residences and school zoning
Hi! Regarding Boston's residential, encyclopedic towers, I decided to post school zoning information for them.
Here is how it works at Boston Public Schools:
"For elementary and middle school, students may apply to:
- Any school within the location's "assignment zone" [1]
- Any school within the location's "walk zone," regardless of the school's "assignment zone."
- Any citywide elementary school, middle school, and K-8
All high schools are "citywide.""
So, for each tower... 1. Under the first option, specify the school zone that the tower/residence is located in. If you cannot determine this, use the school zone tool https://externalweb.mybps.org//ExternalWeb/home.aspx?tabindex=1&tabid=32 (You will have to register to view this, but registration is free) and determine where all/most of the schools are. 2. If you find any non-city wide, non-"Own zone" walking-distance schools, list them under the second option. 3. Leave the third and fourth points blank (I.E. do not add anything)
And, be sure to update each of these listings in case new elementary and/or middle schools open and/or the "assignment zones" change

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:11, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] woefully incomplete without parks/recreation
It seems to me no wikiproject on Boston could hope to be complete without a Category:Parks and Recreation in Boston, populated with such places as:
- Boston Common and Public Garden
- Charles River Esplanade
- Chestnut Hill Reservoir
- Back Bay Fens
- Jamaicaway
- Government Center (if we're going to call this travesty of a urban renewal project a park)
I've added existing articles to this category, but some of them need some work. Thought this should get some priority on wikiproject Boston. --Loodog 03:51, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
- The articles about the links of the Emerald Necklace probably aren't too bad. I saw to them personally although my skills at Wikifying have grown some since I worked on them. House of Scandal 04:50, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Traffic Counter Scare
Another scare in Boston, this time involving traffic counter devices. This is sure to make its rounds through the transportation engineering circuit, but I felt I'd pass it on here in case anyone felt it was notable enough in light of the Mooninite scare: http://www.myfoxboston.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=2527658&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1
- “The consultant didn’t have permission to set the counters”
- “It looks like a private firm may be to blame.”
- “The rubber bands [tubes] stretched across the street were set with some kind of pistol [ramset].”
- “Anything that’s not there every day is suspicious.”
- “No word from the police yet if the consultant will face any fines.”
Enjoy! --Thisisbossi 04:33, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Park Square
Can anyone pinpoint the location of Park Square (Boston)? It's mentioned in lots of places online and the non-existent article is linked from several places in Wikipedia, but I haven't yet been able to figure out where or what it is, exactly. It seems to be near the modern-day Park Plaza, but the relationship is fuzzy. I'm also wondering whether there used to be a Park Square here in the 1800s that has since been obliterated by modern development, or something. -- Beland 01:16, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think it's the area enclosed by Stuart, Charles, Boylston, and Arlington Streets but I'm not sure. --Polaron | Talk 01:42, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
I think that the old bus station was at Park Square. If so, the association with runaways and prostitution may have soured people on using the name in recent years. It was certainly used until the 1970s. MarkinBoston 17:42, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Boston FAR
Boston has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here.
This is your main article folks, so hopefully people can help out on the review. Marskell 12:12, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Greetings from the left coast
Hello Boston. We've been working on Katherine Ann Power who made her claim to fame in your city and have gotten it to GA status, but are hoping to move it up to FA. As part of that process I would like to make articles on all the people in the robbery including the officer that was killed. I also want to make an article on the event itself, but am lacking a title. I was hoping that Bostonians might have a good title that is used there for the event. Plus if anyone would like to write any of the articles, feel free to, I won't stop you. But if anyone knows of a good commonly used title let me know here or on the Power talk page. Thanks. Aboutmovies 19:12, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Red Auerbach
Odd place to advertise for a WP:NBA guy, but I just wanted you to know that Boston Celtics legend Red Auerbach is a GAC. Feel free to give feedback and improve the article. —Onomatopoeia 07:11, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] I've been busy
I've done a major rewrite on the Jamaica Plain page, and some work on the Emerald Necklace articles. I did some significant editing of the Forest Hills page, but I still have serious issues with it. The original author includes the White City/Woodbourne area within Forest Hills, and I'm not sure that's correct. I could be convinced by long-time residents, but I always thought of the two as separate. And if they are separate, then the Forest Hills article shrinks dramatically. The page is also written in one- to three sentence paragraphs - kind of a "college notes" form of writing, and not appropriate for an encyclopedia. I'm not sure what to do about it, but I don't want to blast the page as written without support.
Please take a look at the Jamaica Plain page and tell me what you think. MarkinBoston 01:08, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
I've added pictures and done a little rewriting on the Emerald Necklace pages and the Forest Hills page. I'm putting the same direct link list on all the Emerald Necklace pages for convenience. If someone is interested in one page, they're probably interested in others as well.
[edit] Need your input to select best images for articles.
All. In order to improve some graphic content for Boston articles I took the liberty, went through the city and made some pictures. I ask to vote and select the best picture for each article (like shown below). This is not about pushing own content. I know some pictures were made under some unfavorable conditions. This is about improving the quality of articles. After the voting 3-4 days, I'll move them to commons or mark them for deletion. Thank you! Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
One observation: when you take pictures of tall building with normal cameras, you can get an extreme distortion - that "leaning" effect - that can be quite disorienting. I'd throw out anything that shows that angular effect before voting. MarkinBoston 22:34, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't argue about this effect. Although, it's extremely hard to find an unobstructed view of a particular skyscraper + lighting + reflections + foregn objects + etc, etc., etc. Until we get better ones, I'd suggest to pick from these ones. After seeing all of them so many times, I stopped distinguishing what is good, what is bad. Solarapex 22:42, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
-
- Thank you for the feedback. I've got a roigh idea how I can improve what we have. I changes pictures as per voting below. Although, during this time we got 2 pictures. One is for 1 Internaltonal Place and another is for 60 State Street. I added them below for comparison. Pesonally, the only thing I don't like in them is they are low resolution (300x400). Please take a look and let me know if your opinion got changed. Thank you. Solarapex 22:58, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- I have higher resolution versions of all of my photos (the ones marked "New" below). I'll upload the larger images shortly. Thanks again for letting me know about this project! Frankg 04:24, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] International Place (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
For 2 International Place, I think existing2 is still the best. For 1 International Place, I'd go with 4, because it clearly shows the difference between the two buildings. Raime 01:45, 7 August 2007 (UTC)- New - This is simply a great photo of both buildings. That being said, I still think existing2 is worth saving. Raime 00:28, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- 4 Hiberniantears 16:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 60 State Street (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1, because it shows the building alone. Raime 01:53, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1, as above... the existing really does not capture the two halves of this building either. Hiberniantears 01:59, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] One Boston Place (Boston)
- Yes/No. I'm not sure. Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1 - Much better than the existing image, and is a better view of the building than 2. Raime 01:43, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1 - Much better image, which still preserves the distinct wedge pattern. Hiberniantears 01:45, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] One Devonshire Place (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1 - This one is harder, but I'll go with 1 just becuase it shows more detail of the building's L-shaped design. Raime 01:37, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1 - Agreed. Hiberniantears 01:51, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] One Post Office Square (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 2 - Not at all sure about this one. 1 shows more detail, but 2 is a better shot of the building itself. I'd have to say 2, just because it is the best shot and shows the building alone, not with 2 other skyscrapers and other buildings in the foreground. Raime 01:49, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 2 - Gives you a much better idea of what the entire building looks like. That said, 1 gives perspective on where the building is, and would be worth keeping somewhere, space permitting. Hiberniantears 16:02, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 28 State Street (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 3 - An overall nice shot of the building. 1 is a little dark, and the angle isn't as nice on 2. Raime 01:51, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 3 - As per Raime. Hiberniantears 16:03, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Keystone Building (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1, definitely. Raime 01:52, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1, as existing is pretty much obsolete with all the other images as well. Hiberniantears 16:04, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] One Financial Center (Boston)
- Solarapex 22:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1 - 1 and 2 are both great, but I'd go with 1 because it seems to be a slightly better view of the building, and it shows the building's radio masts. Raime 01:55, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- 1 - Better perspective on location to the budding Greenway Hiberniantears 01:59, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] What is the scope of this page?
Is is Boston proper or Metropolitan Boston? It seems the former. Is there a similar project for the latter? --Walter.bender 16:45, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Right under this page, there are links to the list of Boston articles. There is also a Massachusetts project, so Metro Boston would probably fit there. MarkBul 01:35, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I started this for Boston Proper but if you would like to expand a bit I would not disapprove. There is the Massachusetts page as well you could work off of that. Markco1 00:29, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
