Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. [edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. It seems like a better icon graphic for the user and discussion templates are needed, since an American flag seems ambiguous. It'd also be nice to organize the project page with something like WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America's page. What if we put the Asia map on a US flag in place of the blue field of stars? Then we'd have a single image that combines the two. The only problem is "which Asia map," given the dogmatic view of some. Also, it probably wouldn't work for the userbox template, since it would be too small. --Ishu 08:37, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I uploaded a hack draft version. I'm not happy with how it looks at 150px on the template. Maybe someone else can do a better job, but this is what I have in mind.

[edit] Style guide

Greetings--Over at Talk:Asian American I suggested framing some style guidelines for that page, since it is getting a bit unwieldy. It was suggested that that development occur at this project. If you have one already, we'd be happy to use and/or develop that guide. Some guidelines that have come up include:

  • When to refer to an individual's ethnicity? Especially if the person is wikilinked, avoid mentioning the ethnic group. If there is a theme of progression from one ethnic group to another, it's probably appropriate to mention the ethnic groups.
  • When to use American in reference to groups: I don't know where to go with this issue, but I know there's not a lot of consistency, and there are trade-offs for using it (e.g., clutter) vs. not using it (too general). However, I do think that when referring to official designations, such as census groupings, American should not be used, since the Census Bureau does not refer to groups using the American modifier.
  • Guidelines about discussing "Asian Americans" vs. individual ethnic sub-groups: When to use one vs. the other.
  • The use of hyphens: The usual debate, but would be helpful to be stated in a guideline.
  • Which groups are included? (and whether to include Pacific Islander) Some editors remove references to groups that fall outside of the Census definition (e.g., Afghanistan, Siberia). Should articles use more or less inclusive definitions, and what acknowledgement should be made for other definitions?

Plus it might be helpful to discuss topics and themes that can be threaded through sets of articles. Additional suggestions would be welcome. --Ishu 04:29, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

When discussing Asian Americans and demographics (e.g., income, education), one should be very careful when drawing conclusions. For example, there are large differences in education and income when comparing different Asian American ethnic groups, and these differences might be ignored if the discussion focuses on Asian Americans in aggregate. --Ishu 22:06, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Articles in Category:American Japanese people (not to be confused with Category:Japanese Americans) seems to be mixed or non-ethnic Japanese people who are living in Japan, some or maybe all of them seem to have Japanese citizenship. What I'm wondering is, should we change the name of this category so that it is not confused with Category:Japanese Americans? Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 22:09, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

I'd put the entire Category:Japanese people by ethnic or national origin; for CfD, personally ... virtually every name in there is a violation of WP:NEO. Not to mention, many of the people thus categorised aren't even Japanese citizens; the non-citizens should be put into e.g. Category:American expatriates in Japan. cab 02:08, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
It doesn't look like most articles for the people categorised in that umbrella category bother to mention citizenship matters, which I think would be a notable fact, given the difficulty and relative rarity that one naturalises to gain Japanese citizenship (at least according to Debito Arudou). Oh well. I'm guessing we can thank our nihongophile friends for the naming of those categories, especially since it seems to follow the American convention of "Ethnicity-Citizenship". At Talk:Asian Americans I am proposing creation of a new article for detailed discussion of demographics of Asian Americans. The new article would expand the demographic discussion in the main article, which has become cumbersome and overly detailed. I would appreciate input on this proposal, as well as whether to title the article Demographics of Asian Americans, Asian American demographics or something else. [edit] Cable Act of 1922

I wish to direct your attention to this article on The Cable Act of 1922. As you can probably see, this subject isn't exactly about an Asian American, but it is a piece of legislation that dealt directly with earlier Asian immigrants. I feel that The Cable Act is not as well-known as other pieces of legislation, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act or the Gentlemen's Agreement, but is just as worthy of that kind of attention.

Although I have been a long-time observer, I am a relative novice when it comes to contributing articles. Looking back on the history page, it seems that the article has suffered from some misunderstandings and a lack of substantial citations. I've take a couple of steps to correct that, but I believe that the article could greatly benefit from the sober wisdom of the contributing members of this project. Thanks. It seems we still haven't been able to definitively resolve the question of whether 野雞車 (wild chicken trucks) is an appropriate Chinese term for Chinatown bus lines. I've added tags on the article soliciting an expert to weigh in. Specifically, we need to resolve once and for all whether: (1) the term has ever been used to describe Chinatown buses in the US (as opposed to transportation in Asia), (2) if the term has been used, whether it is pejorative, and (3) if it is pejorative, whether it should be kept (and noted as such) or deleted. [edit] Whether or not to include the "Korean American" category on a page: RfC

I recognize this is a double whammy of emotional content (both the definition of "Who is American?" and the recent events), but I wanted to point out Talk:Cho_Seung-hui#Request_for_Comment:_Inclusion_of_Category:Korean_Americans in case anyone is interested in commenting on this Request for Comment. I am not Asian American or Asian so I have probably argued the point as far as I can, but some of those who read this board may want to weigh in (or not). I just feel strongly, and have evidence for my feelings, that someone raised in the U.S. can be an American (hyphenated or otherwise) even if not a U.S. citizen, and so I was annoyed by the continued (and current) removal of this category from that page. I thought it was relevant as interracial relationships is a hot button issue in Asian American community so I marked the talk page with WP Asian Americans. But since miscegenation is such a big and broad topic, Im not completely sure. Any thoughts? mirageinred 16:31, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

This is a little researched topic in the context of Asian American history, but before the Chinese Exclusion Acts were repealed, an overwhelming majority of Chinese Americans were men, so personally I think the topic of miscegenation is relevant in that sense. These men were not legally allowed to marry white women, but many unofficially did, and they often went to Mexico to actually have a marriage ceremony performed. So far I rated Asian American as top importance (of course) but what about different ethnic groups that make up Asian American as a whole? (Korean Americans, Chinese Americans) And what about some of the smaller ethnic groups like Tibetan Americans? [edit] Manzanar Article Needs Your Help!!

There quite the dispute going on (it's still rather civil) on Talk:Manzanar about the termnology used (concentration camp, internment camp, relocation center). Apparently, some people who are likely relatives of Holocaust victims/survivors are insisting that no camp other than a Nazi camp can be called a concentration camp, even though the other two choices are obviously wrong or euphemistic.

I think the population numbers on each Asian American ethnicity should come from the same source. The Filipino American page has the U.S. State Department as its source for a population count of 4 million, yet the 2006 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census has an estimation of about 2.9 million. All the other pages use the American Community Survey's estimates. We should use the American Community Survey's estimates for the Filipino American page as well.Mrsmith93309 00:51, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

The article on the photographer Tōyō Miyatake is a sad affair. It seems to have been created by the man's grandson, and then augmented a lot, but not by anyone showing any regard for citing sources. I splattered it with {{fact}} and similar flags, which haven't succeeded in encouraging anyone to give evidence for anything. I'd guess that most of what it says is true, but I don't know where to look it up. And material that I don't believe is true has recently been added (see its talk page).

I doubt very highly that anyone in the Miyatake family had anything to do with this article. Someday, when I get more time (I have other articles I intend to work on first), maybe I'll polish this one up. I'm not crying "COI", but really, look at the name at the start of the edit history and then look within the article. But this is a small point: Miyatake is a noteworthy photographer and I have not enjoyed repeatedly cutting him down to size as it were: what little I know of his genuine accomplishments is more than enough to merit an article, and the occasional exaggerations in the article do him no service.

But look, what we have is something that unfortunately seems to have stabilized into a so-so and poorly sourced article bristling with citation neededs (which cumulatively seem to say Don't believe a word of this!), an article about somebody who deserves much better. I can't do the job; perhaps somebody here can.

I'm interested in becoming involved with this project, and am curious as to what definition of "Asian American" is being used. For instance, does an article like Qiu Xiaolong fall within the scope of the project? How about one like Stephen Fung? (I realize the latter article needs sourcing!)
