This WikiProject exists to improve the quality of existing articles related to Physics, to create articles to cover a broader range of physics topics, and to categorize and link them in appropriate ways. The result of this work should be articles that are accessible to the lay reader and yet are also useful to the professional working in the field. Some articles will be of interest to grade-school students, others only to advanced graduate students and post-docs: all such communities should be served.

If you plan to be active in editing articles relating to physics, please add your name and your interests to the participants list. Concrete proposals, suggestions and activities are discussed on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Physics page, and any and all interested parties are encouraged to join up and participate.

Please be aware that the caliber of the current participants is quite high: many, if not most of the active participants of this project are either graduate students in physics, or are practicing professionals and academics. This is stated not to discourage membership, but to encourage it: we need a few more amateurs to tell us when the articles have become too obtuse and difficult to understand, and a few more professionals to oversee the accuracy of the content in assorted subfields. Either way, when you talk here, you'll be talking with peers.

Scope

The scope of this project is basically everything on Wikipedia that is concerned with physics. Please be aware that, as of November 2005, there are over 11,000 articles on mathematics and physics (See Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Current activity), and so this scope is very broad.

Of particular interest are issues dealing with core physics concepts and issues. In particular:

  • Organization of categories in the top level Category:Physics
  • General physics discussions, e.g. concerning the content of physics articles on Wikipedia (use the talk page).
  • Making sure all articles are properly referenced.
  • Watching out for pseudoscience in physics articles and categories (see the list of these topics).
  • Helping to keep the Physics Portal in good shape.

Article ratings

There is a list of articles sorted by quality and importance at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Physics articles by quality, which is automatically created by Oleg Alexandrov's Mathbot. See Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Physics articles by quality log for the latest changes

To add an article to the list, simply add the WikiProject template to the talk page of the article with the following parameters:

{{physics | importance=XXX | class=YYY}}

where class is chosen from this assessment scale, and importance is the importance within physics according to this scale.

  • Experimental physics needs content to become an encyclopedic article.
  • Frame-dragging needs mathematical detail, and incorporation of references as in-text cites
  • D-Wave Systems needs review for its statements about quantum computation
  • Gibbs paradox needs editorial review re: refactoring current topics into separate articles
  • General relativity needs more citations
  • Local symmetry needs a reference. Note on talk page claims article is incorrect.
  • Isometries in physics needs someone who can understand it to clean it up. It has now been tagged for 23 months, and, with all due respect, most of us who would like to clean it up can't understand a word of it.
  • Muscle contraction needs input to resolve a long dispute (see Talk:Muscle contraction#Eccentric, continued in the sections "Eccentric contractions and forces" and "Eccentric redux") concerning whether the opposing force in an "eccentric contraction" must necessarily be greater than the force exerted by the muscle (at all times, not just initially) and whether less energy is consumed in "eccentric contractions" than in "concentric contractions" for the same amount of force.
