WikiProject on Bangladesh

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Bangladesh. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

[edit] Scope

This wikiproject focuses on creation, improvement and promotion of Bangladesh-related articles in Wikipedia. The scope of the project includes Bangladeshi culture, way of life, geography, people, history and society.

For a list of current articles see here.

[edit] Participants

Please feel free to add your name to this list here if you would like to join the project; you are also encouraged to participate in any of our descendant WikiProjects that might interest you.

[edit] One big task

Create an article for an article compared to the Banglapedia: National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh. The basic search engine for Banglapedia is at this URL. You can also access it through this (dot-org), this (dot-net), or this (dot-info) URLs, or even this mirror site. Guidelines may be adopted from Wikipedia:1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The goal of Wikipedia is to become a complete, accurate encyclopaedia. The three major content policies (verifiability, no original research and a neutral point of view) and notability contain important advise and rules on how to achieve accuracy, so careful fact checking is strongly recommended.

Remain objective as possible. The point and ideal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopaedic neutral body of knowledge. Avoid using the first-person point of view (emphasising the facts; not the editor). Explain the evidence (from the links and references) and explain the reasons of any conclusions.

Remember, Wikipedia is not about just writing whatever is true (See: Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not), it is about writing whatever can be verified as truth. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for why we cite sources, and Wikipedia:Citation templates for ways of citing sources properly.

[edit] Don't over-categorize

See also: Wikipedia:Overcategorization

Having added an article to, say, Category:Massacres in Bangladesh, there's no need to also add that article to Category:War crimes in Bangladesh, Category:Bangladesh Liberation War, Category:History of Bangladesh or Category:Bangladesh. The category hierarchy expresses the fact that every article about Massacres in Bangladesh is an article about War crimes in Bangladesh and an article Bangladesh Liberation War.

[edit] Public domain photographs

See also: Wikipedia:Public domain image resources

According to Bangladesh copyright act of 2000 (covered by The Daily Star), all photographs enter the public domain after sixty years counted from the beginning of the following calendar year after they were first published (i.e. as of 2006, prior to 1946-01-01). Try to upload as many such images as relevant and tag them with {{PD-Bangladesh}}.

[edit] The most important task

Place the WikiProject History of Bangladesh banner on the DISCUSSION (aka "TALK") PAGE of every History of Bangladesh and History of Bengal related entry. Here is how to do this:

  1. Go to Category:Bangladesh or Category:Bengal. These pages will not have all Bangladesh related pages, but are good places to start.
  2. Open a Bangladesh related page (most won't have banners yet).
  3. Open the "Talk" page by hitting the tab at the top of the window.
  4. If the banner is there, do nothing. If not, open the page for editing by hitting the "Edit" tab at the top of the Talk page.
  5. Copy this text - {{WP Bangladesh}} - to the top of the page.
  6. Hit the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

A list of all pages currently with this banner can be found at Category:WikiProject Bangladesh articles.

You can do more to the {{WP Bangladesh}} banner. For additional information check Template:WP Bangladesh. If an article included in Category:WikiProject Bangladesh articles is assessed as B or higher you may try adding {{Portal|Bangladesh|COA of Bangladesh.svg}} to the article page, under a section called "See also" or "External links".

[edit] Reviewing AFDs

Add the page Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Bangladesh to your watchlist to receive notifications of Bangladesh related articles that are nominated for deletion.

Keep the list updated by adding any relevant AFD nominations you may come across and remove any that have been closed.

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced. If you have adopted an article, please, feel free to add that information here.

[edit] An appropriate barnstar

To award a participant with a barnstar you may make use of - {{subst:WikiProject Bangladesh/barnstar|message ~~~~}}. It would look something like:

The Barnstar of National Merit
I award this barnstar for your outstanding contribution to Bangladesh related article. Bangladeshi Wikipedian 19:27, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

The goal of Wikipedia is to become a complete, accurate encyclopedia. Verifiability is an important tool to achieve accuracy, so it is strongly recommended to check facts. However, don't be too keen to remove unverified information at the cost of completeness.

[edit] Levels

  • Secondary sources: Piece of writings which were not penned contemporaneously with the events in question".
