[edit] DivisionsScope

WikiProject Assyria was introduced on October 29, 2006 in order to collaborate with others in a more organized and effective way on articles pertaining to topics related to the Assyrian/Syriac/Chaldean ethnic group.

For early Assyrian history, it is a daughter project of WikiProject Ancient Near East. For Christian times, it is a daughter project of WikiProject Syriac Christianity.

Projects with overlapping scopes include Wikipedia:WikiProject Syria and Wikipedia:WikiProject Iraq. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Arab world.


Project participants may be interested in adding their user page to Category:Assyrian_Wikipedians (for people self-identifying as "Assyrian"), or to the sub-categories Category:Chaldean Catholic Wikipedians, Category:Chaldean Catholic Wikipedians and Category:Syriac Orthodox Wikipedians intended for adherents of these respective churches.

Participation in WikiProject Assyria is not limited to anyone; it's open to all editors who want to make positive contributions to ancient and modern Assyrian-related topics. We have separated the project into two groups. One who will prefer to work on ancient Assyrian related articles (ex: Assyrian empire, Assyrian kings, etc) and one that would like to work on modern pages (current Assyrian villages, current politicians, etc). If you would like to work on both, then list your name under "both".

Aramaic is a Semitic language with a 3,000-year history. It has been the language of administration of empires and the language of divine worship. It is the original language of a large section of the biblical books of Daniel and Ezra. It was probably the language of Jesus, it is the main language of the Talmud, and it is still spoken today as a first language by numerous small communities. Aramaic belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family. Within this diverse family, Aramaic belongs to the Semitic subfamily. Aramaic is a part of the Northwest Semitic group of languages, which also includes the Canaanite languages (including Hebrew).

Sargon of Akkad, also known as Sargon the Great (Akkadian Šarru-kinu, cuneiform ŠAR.RU.KI.IN, meaning "the true king" or "the king is legitimate"), was an Akkadian king famous for his conquest of the Sumerian city-states in the 24th and 23rd centuries BC. The founder of the Dynasty of Akkad, Sargon reigned for 56 years, c. 2333 – 2279 BC (short chronology). He became a prominent member of the royal court of Kish, ultimately overthrowing its king before embarking on the conquest of Mesopotamia. Sargon's vast empire is known to have extended from Elam to the Mediterranean sea, including Mesopotamia, parts of modern-day Iran and Syria, and possibly parts of Anatolia and the Arabian peninsula. He ruled from a new capital, Akkad (Agade), which the Sumerian king list claims he built, on the left bank of the Euphrates. Sargon is regarded as one of the first individuals in recorded history to create a multiethnic, centrally ruled empire, and his dynasty controlled Mesopotamia for around a century.
