[edit] Goals/Scope

The ultimate goal of this WikiProject is to improve the quality of articles relating to amusement and theme parks. In order to accomplish this goal, Wikipedia will need:

1. An article on every amusement park in the world (as well as parks that are no longer operating), which should meet these standards:

Note: There are separate projects for particular categories of parks, for example Wikipedia:WikiProject UK Theme Parks and Wikipedia:WikiProject Disneyland, which will be addressing parks within the scope of their projects.

2. Articles on everything related to amusement parks. This includes, for a start,

  • types of rides (ie. log flumes, roller coasters, carousels, etc.;
  • people involved in developing rides and amusement parks

[edit] Stub making

There are many amusement parks out there that have no article on Wikipedia yet. All you need to do to start an article on a park is...

  1. gather the basic facts and stats
  2. Create the article with the proper title according to the Article Naming Standards.
  3. Copy and paste the following into the article:
    {{Amusement-park-stub}}

    or, if the article is about an amusement ride use:

    {{ride-stub}}

  4. Copy and past the following into the talk page for the article:
    {{AmusementParkProject|class=stub}}

[edit] Photography

No amusement park article is complete without pictures. The primary picture - the one at the top of the stat sheet - should best illustrate what the park has to offer. This could be a featured landmark (ie. Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom, the park logo, or a skyline.

Other pictures, are also greatly appreciated. If every interested Wikipedian simply goes to their nearest amusement park and takes good pictures, we'll definitely have enough pictures... as long as enough people contribute!

[edit] Standardization - need to decide on naming standards

[edit] Article Structure - need to decide on one

Should we have a format for each article in the WikiProject? Which categories are applicable to the topic? here is the structure that was suggested in the goals above:

    • A standard intro.
    • A stat sheet, which should (if possible) be accompanied by a picture that best shows what the park has to offer. Is the the same as the info box??
    • Basic facts and trivia about the park, such as location, records held (past and present), events (such as accidents) appearances in fiction etc. etc... just about anything you want.
    • History of the park if it has one
    • A template linking to all the roller coasters in the park, listed alphabetically.
    • A template linking to other parks in the chain if the park is part of a chain
    • If the park is part of a resort or complex (ie. Disney, Universal), an appropriate template should link to other parks and attractions within the resort

[edit] GET OUT THERE AND VISIT THE PARKS!!!

This is THE way to write great articles on park. Go to the park, ride the rides, take great pictures of them, talk to the operators, and whatever else you can think of - all with the goal of improving each park's article. Anyone can (and is encouraged to) create and improve articles on parks they've never visited, but it takes someone who visits a park regularly, and most importantly, is enthusiastic about it, to turn a stub into a good theme park article. If you work at a park, even better, but remember to avoid disclosing information that guests would not have access to!

But remember WP:NOR and WP:NPOV. Your park experience can't be used as research, but it can guide your research. Published sources are still a must.

[edit] Increase membership

You can invite others to participate in the project by putting {{subst:AP invite}} on a prospective member's page. It will fill in that persons user name and your user name to look something like this:

Hello, WikiProject Amusement Parks thank you for your recent contributions on articles related to amusement parks. I'd like to invite you to become a part of WikiProject Amusement Parks, a WikiProject which aims to improve the quality of all amusement park related articles on Wikipedia. Feel free to leave a message on the talk page, hope to see you over there! Tinned Elk 20:45, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

The template is located here {{AP invite}}.

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

  • Shoot-the-Chutes - --Tinned Elk 16:52, 16 August 2007 (UTC) still working on the amusement park ride - particularly interested in the old ride from the early 1900s, found a great old picture in public domain
  • Playland (San Francisco) - Tinned Elk
    • add complete information - Y Done (August 2007)
    • get photos - if anyone has any old photos showing Playland the article would be pretty complete.
  • Chutes Park - Tinned Elk
    • add additional information - Y Done (August 2007) - could use some help with this if someone is interested in old amusement parks
    • get photos - if anyone has any old photos showing Chutes Park in LA, the article would be better
  • Sea Lion Park- Tinned Elk
    • add additional information - Y Done (August 2007) for now - still a stub could use some help with this if someone is interested in old amusement parks

[edit] New Wikipedia articles related to amusement parks

Please feel free to list your new amusement park-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please).

[edit] Templates

[edit] Project

{{AmusementParkProject}} - use on talk pages

[edit] Stub templates

{{Amusement-park-stub}} - use on article pages

{{ride-stub}} - use on article pages

[edit] Park templates

These templates link to all of the roller coasters in a park, listed alphabetically. They should be placed in the park's article as well as each of the coaster articles for that park. Coasters that appear in more than one park (such as Batman: The Ride) should have a park template for each park they appear in, but ONLY if all instances of that coaster are IDENTICAL. If you have created a park template, please list it here using {{tl|TemplateName}}.

If a park is part of a larger complex, for example the four parks of Walt Disney World or the two of Universal Orlando Resort, one template can be used for the entire complex.

  • {{AP invite}} - use on prospective member's talk page, be sure to substitute ({{subst:AP invite}})
  • {{Amusementparksproject Navigation}} - put on project pages to help get around
  • {{Amusement park accidents}} -- placed on ride-specific pages that have been involved in major, citable incidents. Please see the various incident pages for specifics on what qualifies (dying due to ride malfunction) and what doesn't (having a heart attack while on a bus leaving the park).
