TV.com summary

Whoopi is a short-lived television situation comedy, starring Whoopi Goldberg as "Mavis Rae", a member of the former one-hit wonder group "The Ebony Blackbirds." The series revolved around the events and people at her hotel, the Lamont Hotel, in New York City. The show was not well-received among some political conservatives since some of its dialogue and situations satirized President George W. Bush and criticized his policies during the American invasion of Iraq. The show aired at 8:00 PM ET, on Tuesdays starting September 9, 2003, on NBC; it went off the air in April 2004.

[edit] Cast and characters

  • Mavis Rae, an irritated, chainsmoking one hit wonder, reduced to running a small and unsuccessful NYC hotel. Played by Whoopi Goldberg.
  • Nasim, The Le Mont's Persian janitor with implied terrorist connections. Played by Omid Djalili.
  • Courtney Rae, Mavis' brother. He had a job at Enron, and now lives in a room in Mavis' hotel. He is the complete opposite to his sister in every way. Played by Wren T. Brown.
  • Rita, Courtney's 'culturally confused' girlfriend. Mavis dislikes Rita, and disapproves of their relationship. Played by Elizabeth Regen.
