Where to Now St. Peter?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Where to Now St. Peter?" is a song by Elton John with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. It's the sixth track on his third album, Tumbleweed Connection. Many believe that the song's lyrics is a story from the American Civil War, like the previous track on the album, My Father's Gun. It's also rumoured that the song is based on a poem from the days of World War I, where a soldier shoots an enemy, eventually get killed, and meets him in heaven. Taupin has never said that was the actual influence. Research by Daniel Stone reveals that the song writing team of Grant and David Goddard had published the song "What Then Now St. Peter" in 1969, one year prior to the release of Tumbleweed Connection, so it is largely believed that Taupin was influenced by the previous song's title and/or lyrics.

Elton also performed the song at his 60th birthday concert.
