[edit] Minority Party (Papua New Guinea)
A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Minority Party (Papua New Guinea), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Dbromage [Talk] 07:16, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'd been meaning to do that. It may have been a misunderstanding - anyway, it's pretty plainly in need of deletion. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 11:06, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Central Provincial
Have you been able to find anything confirming that last result yet? Is it being challenged in court? Rebecca 09:15, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- I haven't been able to find any online or print reference for it yet. Hoping that one of the newspapers will do a list of all 109 MPs, or that the Electoral Commission will issue some final results. Central Provincial was declared on 31 July and I've heard verbally that it was won by Alphonse Moroi, as expected. There is a court challenge, as with many seats (and it's most irritating that this story didn't mention the winner), but that doesn't affect the declaration until the court finds otherwise. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 09:25, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

- Heh, and the post-courier just wants to run "elections were a peaceful, non confrontational rosy happy endeavor" stories aliasd·U·T 13:32, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, the Post-Courier declared that it had been won (and that that had been declared) by Moroi on July 30, and then declared that he was still just leading on July 31. Very odd. Rebecca 08:46, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Missing seat and by-election
Which seat is still missing? And when will the by-election be held? Thanks! —Nightstallion 17:41, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- The seat for which we don't have a published result is Central Provincial (the winner was Alphonse Moroi, but we have no written source for that, yet, unfortunately). It was declared somewhere between 29 July and 31 July. Hoping that the PNG Electoral Commission will produce a list of the final results or something. Neither major newspaper, nor the Electoral Commission, nor any media anywhere else that I know of, have published a list of all 109 winners - quite disappointing.
The seat of Rai Coast, in Madang, will have a by-election in September, the Electoral Commission says. There have been some calls for the second-placed candidate to be given the seat, to avoid the by-election process, but it seems that a by-election will go ahead. There's been considerable criticism of the appeals court's slowness - if they'd finalised their decision a few weeks earlier, Yali would not have been allowed to run, and this mess would have been avoided. As it is, there are 108 members actually in Parliament at present. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 00:59, 22 August 2007 (UTC)- Aha! Just after writing that, I decided to try another search, and found a reference for Alphonse Moroi being the Central Province governor (i.e. winner of the Central Provincial seat). At last, we have all the results! Wantok (toktok) 01:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! So, there'll be a September by-election? Might want to mention that in the article, no? —Nightstallion 09:01, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Still no announcement of the by-election date? —Nightstallion 15:14, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not yet (that I've seen). Various stories about candidates jockeying for position, but no Electoral Commission yet. Wantok (toktok) 13:42, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- nods BTW, I've just added a new column to add the party standings *after* the membership changes. —Nightstallion 09:02, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Another story on the by-election - "indications were that the bi-election would be held either in October or November". Wantok (toktok) 00:42, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks! BTW, where those all the membership changes there were? That's rather few, isn't it? —Nightstallion 06:32, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- There's quite a few more membership changes than that, mostly in the form of independents joining parties, but those three are the only ones we've gotten around to confirming yet. If no one else does, I'll add them when I go through and write articles on people (though I'm a bit stuck at the moment because I'm trying to research the extent of Belden Namah's involvement in the Sandline affair). [edit] Help
Since you seem to know a lot about Oceanian politics, I thought I'd ask you: Have you seen any results for the Nauruan constitutional referendum, 2007 around? I know it's been held (in contrast to the referendum in Sierra Leone, where I searched for results only to found out it had been cancelled...), but I have not been able to find *any* mention at all about its result... As the Nauruan presidential election, 2007 was done in parliament and not by the people, I suppose it might have been rejected, but it might just as well have passed and simply not gone into effect until the next time... Help? —Nightstallion 13:09, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- I have no personal contacts in Nauru, and hadn't noticed any results, sorry - but are you sure the referendum's been held yet? A couple of stories seem to indicate the constitutional changes were still being discussed by a convention in May/June, and one said the referendum might be in October. Do you have better sources? Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 14:08, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, but that was when the election was also expected to be held in October... This is one of the only sources I can find on the issue. —Nightstallion 14:50, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Coverage of Nauru seems even worse than that of PNG. I'll keep an eye out. Wantok (toktok) 03:01, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot, hope you have more luck than I do... You don't happen to know anybody who knows someone in Nauru? ;) —Nightstallion 14:57, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- Apparently, the referendum will be held in October after all. —Nightstallion 10:51, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, that's good - well, at least it means we might yet have a chance of finding the results! Wantok (toktok) 12:08, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed, though it's almost embarrassing how little information about this there is... —Nightstallion 20:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Another thing I could use help with is information about the results of the Kiribatian parliamentary election, 2007... —Nightstallion 10:24, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- FYI, while there's a list of members on the parliament's homepage, they don't list party allegiances and state that those often change multiple times in a single session. I've written then an e-mail asking for some info, anyway. —Nightstallion 20:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Still no reply. sighs —Nightstallion 16:38, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
BTW, have you heard about the early next French Polynesian legislative election yet? —Nightstallion 20:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, very late this year or early next year French Polynesia will hold parliamentary, municipal and presidential elections. Actually, new interim president want to hold parliamentary elections after local municipal elections of early 2008, but France is putting pressure to French Polynesia to hold new parliamentary elections as soon as possible (December this year ,so before local elections) to stabilize the territory. Parliamentary elections should be followed by a new presidential election. (Maximiliano Herrera of Electoral Calendar)
Hi Wantok, I've been trying to write articles for some of the newly elected MPs, but I seem to have run into a bit of trouble with Boka Kondra, the new MP for North Fly in Western Province. I've so far found three conflicting sources - one that says he joined NA, one that says he joined the PNC, and one that says he was with the opposition. I've also seen different spellings of his name in just about every article that I've read. I don't suppose you've come across any sources which might shed a bit of light on this by any chance? [edit] Re: Template:User tpi-0
Hi Wantok. I am registered on the Tok Pisin wikipedia, and I noticed that you have altered the wording on the tpi-0 template. While I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the translation is 100% correct, I must question why this one was changed, since I copied the whole original template off tpi.wikipedia over to here... The wording used on theirs was "Dispela yusa i no save Tok Pisin" - I know the long should have been in there, but could not figure out where the heck to place it, since I am only tpi-1 and have a hell of a lot to learn! I hope that you don't take this as me being rude or anything, I was just wondering whether the actual tpi-0 template on the Tok Pisin wiki should be changed also, or whether it already has been? Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 09:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, thanks for letting me know! I'll fix the tpiwiki one too. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 09:54, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
hehe I think a bad translation is quite appropriate :) aliasd·U·T 11:58, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

- Not a bad translation considering English is my second language, Icelandic is my first, and I have been learning Tok Pisin from a load of old programmes that ABC Radio Australia's Shortwave service sent out. I don't know whether they still do, but there you go. Incidentally, Wantok; Do you need any administrators to work on tpi? I have applied here and been rejected for too few edits (Just short of 2000 now) and I would be happy to help out, even only as a temporary admin. If you have anything you need help with, point me at it and I will do what I can!.. Thor Malmjursson 15:14, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Pretty good then! At the moment tpiwiki has 2 active admins, which is more than enough for now. Although, we do need as much help as possible with creating content, and we have a template for novice translators to tag their articles for review by a native speaker of tok pisin. aliasd·U·T 00:38, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, TAM, you did well - the use of long and bilong can be quite confusing. Radio Australia does still broadcast a Tok Pisin service (despite its funding being cut back drastically by the benighted Australian government), and audio and transcripts are on the web. Minor correction - we don't have any actual native speakers (neither are there any, it seems, on enwiki; there aren't that many people with TP as a first language, even in PNG, where Tok Pisin is typically a 2nd or 3rd or 4th language) - the template aliasd is referring to is for review by fluent speakers. And as he says, we're greatly in need of content contributors. Wantok (toktok) 01:21, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Republicanism
Just a short question -- is there any support for turning PNG into a republic? —Nightstallion 10:23, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- It's basically never mentioned as an issue these days. It has been raised a few times in the past but never really got anywhere. I very much doubt it will happen any time soon - it's just not an issue with significant political weight. However, if a government decided to push for it, it would probably happen - my impression is that there would be little active resistance (unlike in Australia, where a significant minority of the population is decidedly pro-monarchy). Wantok (toktok) 05:41, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Moreover, because it was assumed by the Constitutional Planning Committee that PNG would indeed sever the link with the monarchy, all references to the head of state are to the "Head of State" rather than to the Crown or the Queen. The Queen is not on the banknotes or coins; criminal actions are brought in the name of the State, not Regina. There is very little general awareness of the formal (and largely notional) role of the monarchy in PNG and the governor general does indeed act as a de facto non-executive president.Masalai 11:15, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well, in Australia, it's more or less a decided matter that it will become a republic; support is around 60% or above for a directly elected president, and Kevin Rudd -- who'll almost certainly will the next election -- is a republican. Even if Rudd should fail to win, Howard will hand over to Costello during his term -- who is also a republican...
- So, PNG is mostly only de iure a monarchy? Why has noone thought of changing that, yet, then? —Nightstallion 14:55, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Excellent points, Masalai, thanks. There's no significant barrier to moving to a republic, as far as I know; and indeed the main political reason for adopting a constitutional-monarchy model at independence (the retention of imperial honours) is now defunct, as PNG has moved to a local honours system. However, as Masalai points out, it has no profile whatsoever as an issue, and there's no compelling political reason for a government to invest time and energy in it. Wantok (toktok) 03:49, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Mh. Do you think it would serve as a catalyst if other countries, especially in the same region, become republics (Australia and Solomon Islands are likely in the next few years)? —Nightstallion 07:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- In the present political climate in PNG, Australia becoming a republic would probably make it even less likely that PNG would; however, the current government is much better inclined toward the Solomons. That could have an effect. Overall, though, I think it's highly unlikely for the foreseeable future. Wantok (toktok) 23:36, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nauru referendum
Hi Wantok I found this link regarding fresh news about Nauru referendum. Can you understand this language ? http://www.abc.net.au/ra/tokpisin/news/s2076573.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.24.74.42 (talk) 06:03, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, that's Tok Pisin (in Radio Australia's somewhat unusual written form). The translation is:
- It appears that the people of Nauru, a Pacific island country, will vote in a referendum early next year for a change in their constitution.
- This constitutional change, debated for more than 18 months, is intended to bring a halt to the financial mismanagement and corruption that have brought the country to bankruptcy.
- It was originally intended that the referendum would take place before Christmas, but due to elections being held, the referendum has been rescheduled for early in the new year.
- The chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, Mathew Batsuia (BAT-SUE-AHH), a member of Parliament, has confirmed that the government intends to reform the constitution, and the people of Nauru will have the opportunity to vote in a referendum on these major changes:
- "The crucial parts relate to finance, they relate to the parliament legislature, they relate to the judiciary. And they also relate to the executive. Those are the more crucial parts of any country, and democracy. They have to be changed by the Nauruan people through referendum. The bill of rights too will have to be passed by referendum, so they will have to go before the people."
- Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 07:06, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Wantok. So I suggest to create a wiki page called Nauru Constitutional Referendum 2008.(the old one was deleted) I have been a couple of months without any news about this referendum, but at last we got something.
