[edit] Uploading images

Hi there, thanks for all the images that you've uploaded for use in the Lackawanna Cutoff article. However, it would be much better if the image names had something to do with the images themselves. For example, Image:October 2006 021.jpg would be better named something like Paulins Kill Viaduct.jpg. You can't rename images you've already uploaded, but just keep this in mind for future reference.

Also, I encourage you to upload your images to the Wikimedia Commons when they are your own work. This allows wikipedias of other languages (such as french, german, or russian) to use the same copy of the image without having to upload a separate version on their own wikipedia. You can include images from the Commons in the same way you include images from en.Wikipedia, using [[Image:IMAGENAME]]. Thanks again for your contributions. Cheers! —lensovettalk – 21:11, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Lackawanna Limited at Roseville.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Lackawanna Limited at Roseville.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

You do not know when the photo was published, only when it was taken. If it was not published, it is only public domain if the author died before 1937. --NE2 08:01, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redlinks

Please stop removing the redlinks in the Lackawanna Cutoff article. Red links, while possibly aesthetically unpleasing, serve a very important purpose on wikipedia; there is nothing inherently "bad" about a red link. Please take a look at WP:RED, read it over, and return the table to the way I made it. Thank you. —lensovettalk – 07:52, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo use?

Hi Wally from Columbia. Just double checking regarding the photo of the Steamtown excursion atop the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct at the article Steamtown National Historic Site. You indicate that you were the copyright holder to the photo, and you have released it to the public domain. Is that correct? If that is accurate, then there is no problem using it in another publication. (Still, if you would like photo credit, we may be able to accommodate that. No handles or user names, though.) Also, do you know what year that photo was taken? Steamtown excursions ran over the viaduct only from 1989 to 1993 -- although another one is scheduled to happen on 9 September 2007. Please reply on my talk page. Thanks — Michael J (talk) 20:56, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lackawanna Cut-Off

Hi there! I noticed your enthusiasm for this particular article and wanted to mention that I've reverted your edits on image size. Using the "thumb" parameter alone without indicating a px size allows user preferences to command the size of the image. If you want to see large images by default, you can change your preferences. Do remember that everyone viewing this article will have varying sizes of monitors and we want to maximize accessibility to this article.

Also, please remember to hit "Show preview" instead of saving intermediate versions. It will reduce the number of page saves in the history. Thanks! --Rkitko (talk) 21:36, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Please also be aware of the three revert rule. Reverting to your size preferences over the reasonable "thumb" preference can be seen as vandalism. Please discuss the photo sizes before continuing to edit. Thanks. --Rkitko (talk) 21:41, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Because you were unwilling to discuss the image sizes before continuing, I have protected the page. Please begin a discussion with me stating why you would like to see the images larger. Thanks. --Rkitko (talk) 21:46, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps we can come to a common understanding on the Lackawanna Cut-Off article. If I hadn't placed the collection of photos on the page (all of which except the historical photos I've taken personally), I don't think I'd be writing this right now. I didn't create the file, but after starting with basically a shell (minimal stuff, no pictures and limited text) I've also written about 85% (a rough guess) of the text. I've seen some pretty good additions to the text, but I'd like to see more (and not from me!). I'll note that I've given presentations before most of the municipalities along the Cut-Off, and that I personally met Jerry Turco a number of times, so some of my information is actually first-hand.

I'd also like to see some more photos. Since you live in the area also, I would encourage you to see if you can take additional shots.

Anyway, for a better visual look--in other words eye-catching appeal--I suggest that the Paulins Kill Viaduct and Cut-Off map surround the introductory text. I wish I had a better electronic version of the map, but it was the best I had immediately available, and my attempts to create a better map have thus far failed. I haven't been in to edit the page in quite some time and I see a significant degradation in the look of the "Interesting Facts" section, with large blocks of white space. There are also numerous "dead" links that another author insists on putting in for station references...a great idea, but it looks pretty bad if the target file is empty. But he is insistent. As I am, I'll admit. Personally, I would agree on a 300 px limit on the secondary photos, but I believe lead photos in the 350 - 400 px are not inappropriate. If someone has dial up (versus high-speed) internet service, I don't know that putting in tiny photos does the page, or the subject, any justice. I presume that we both would like to see the Cut-Off reactivated.

Be that as it may, dinner is about to be served. I'm optimistic that maybe we can work something out.

Chuck Walsh--Wally From Columbia (NJ) (talk) 22:23, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to discuss the issue. I'm sure we can come to some kind of consensus on the issue as well. As a matter of style, Wikipedia maintains a manual of style and section regarding images, WP:MOS#Images. In general, images aren't supposed to be sandwiched between text and lead images are supposed to be right-oriented. Of course you can read more there about the guidelines. I'd agree that the first lead image should be 300px (no larger) and the map as well, since it's hard to read smaller maps. But the rest should remain the default 180px for the reasons I stated above. It's not necessarily about dialup connections, but about aspect ratios of monitors. If you're like me, you have a modern computer with a regular monitor aspect ratio of 1024×768. Some users may still have 800×600. So an image of 375px is nearly half the width of their monitor! Adding in the Wikipedia navigation bar at the left leaves very little room for the lead text.
And yes, I'd love to see the Cut-Off reactivated. I grew up in Andover township. I'm actually more interested in the Sussex Railroad (I'd like to hear your thoughts on that article when you get the chance). But I now live out here in Ohio, far from the Lackawanna Cut-Off.
I'll mention a couple other things here: You said that some of the information you've added has been personal first-hand knowledge and personal communications. While that is acceptable for some publications, Wikipedia has a no original research policy. All information in Wikipedia should be referenced or cited. Personal communications can be viewed as unverifiable original research. Just for future reference... Also, I'd again urge you to make use of the "Show preview" button when editing. Or, as another option, you could make tons of small edits in a sandbox before copying it into the main article. (In this case, you could copy and paste the current article into your own personal sandbox at User:WallyFromColumbia/sandbox, then edit at will and if there were no interim edits at Lackawanna Cut-Off between the time you copied and the time you pasted, you could just roll out the changes you made in the sandbox into the "live" article.) Let me know what your thoughts are on all this. Hope you enjoyed your dinner. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 22:58, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
