[edit] History
WABG-TV's first broadcast was on October 20, 1959 as an independent station. It quickly joined the CBS network but switched to ABC after complaints from WJTV in Jackson, Mississippi that WABG was encroaching on its coverage area. Until WXVT in Greenville began operations in 1981, WJTV served as the default CBS affiliate for the southern counties in the Delta while Memphis' WREG-TV brought CBS programming to the northern counties.
WABG established Delta Fox on September 13, 2006, the day after Foxnet shut down. The nationwide Foxnet channel originally provided Fox programming to cable subscribers in the Delta area (which was one of the last markets to be offered the service). Foxnet originally planned to close down on September 1 but was delayed until September 12 to allow WABG time to quickly put a Fox affiliate on a new digital subchannel.
On September 5, 2007, WABG announced that it was being sold from Bahakel Communications to Commonwealth Communications pending FCC approval. The sale was finalized on October 29.
[edit] WAGB-DT2 "Delta Fox"
WABG operates the area's Fox affiliate on its second digital subchannel. It is known on-air as Delta Fox and is also offered on Suddenlink cable channel 10. Unlike the main WABG channel (and most other Fox affiliates), WABG-DT2 is not a 24-hour station. Monday through Thurdays, Delta Fox airs from 5 to 10:35 P.M. and on Fridays from 2:30 to 11:05 P.M. During the weekends, its broadcasting time is variable. WAGB-DT2 airs all Fox Sports programming on weekends regardless of starting time. It does not air any children programs from 4Kids TV, however. There are future plans to make Delta Fox a 24-hour operation. WABG-DT2 simulcasts all evening newscasts that air on the main WABG channel. There is also a news bureau in Cleveland.
