VIT University (formerly Vellore Institute of Technology) is a private coeducational university located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. The university was founded by Mr. G. Viswanathan in 1984 and is currently its chancellor. VIT was affiliated to the University of Madras until 2000. In the year 2001 the institution was conferred the status of deemed university by the Ministry of human resources, Govt. of INDIA. In September 2006, it was renamed as VIT University.

The institute was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by Mr. G. Viswanathan, a former Member of Parliament and Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu. The college was then affiliated to the University of Madras and functioned as a private self-financing institution. It was promoted by the North Arcot Educational and Charitable Trust. In 2001, the institute was awarded the deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India and hence the name was changed to Vellore Institute of Technology. In September 2006, it was renamed as VIT University as per a new decree issued by the University Grants Commission enabling deemed universities to change their name to 'university'[1]. Some of its technical courses have been accredited by Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK.[2][3]

The University is divided into Schools based on the streams. On an average, each School has 2 Associate Professors (Phd holders) and 3 Assistant Professors. VIT University has placement with IT players like TCS, Cognizant and Wipro. Many research programs are also conducted in the campus.

The admission into Btech courses in VIT is through its own entrance exam VITEEE.[4]
[edit] VIT Engineering Entrance Examination
VITEEE stands for "VIT Engineering Entrance Examination". Admission to B.Tech. Degree Programme at VIT University is based on VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEEE) conducted all over India.[5]

- A pass in 10+2 or its equivalent with a minimum average of 60% of marks in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics or Biology (PCM / PCB)
- A pass in 10+2 or its equivalent with 50% average marks in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics or Biology (PCM / PCB) for candidates belonging to SC/ST and Students hailing from Jammu & Kashmir and from the North Eastern States of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh
- Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (PCM) candidates are eligible for all the programmes
- Physics, Chemistry & Biology (PCB) candidates are eligible only for B.Tech. Bioinformatics, Biotechnology & Biomedical Engineering programmes

- Advertisement given regarding issue of application forms, important dates etc., in all leading newspapers all over India and notified in the VIT website
- Applications can be obtained from selected Post Offices / may be obtained by post from VIT.
- Entrance exam conducted in major cities all over India.
- Publication of results in leading websites.
- Call for counselling in batches and allotment of branches on the basis of the rank.

Riviera[6] is the cultural event of VITU.[7] It is a 3 day fest conducted once every year mostly around January. The fest includes lots of competitions among participants from various colleges of South India and various cultural events. Renouned musicians and rock bands like Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, k.k, Parikrama and Euphoria have performed at VIT before.
