Defined as part of SR 20 from Brookneal to Blackstone in 1918; later (1923?) became SR 323 east of Keysville; SR 351 created from Sussex to Waverly

1928 renumbering: SR 351 became SR 48; SR 323 split at Lunenburg between SR 401 and SR 47

SR 48 later extended to Keysville, and SR 20 to Woolwine

[edit] Turnpikes and other old roads

  • Lunenburg Plank Road, (Wattsboro to) Kenbridge to Blackstone

I don't think the road was a turnpike near Rocky Mount, despite the name. --NE2 20:31, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Rocky Mount to east of Penhook: right alongside a railroad, but the main road went southeast via Toshes Road to Chatham
  • Penhook to ?: there does not appear to have been a main road
