The Victorian Railways Y class diesel electric locomotive are a small branch line and shunting unit built by Clyde Engineering (now EDI Rail). Three separate orders of these locomotives were delivered. The first order of locomotives reused bogies and traction motors from the scrapped Swing Door Electric Multiple Unit suburban trains.

After the closure of smaller branch lines across the state and the ending of short pick-up goods trains, usage of the class dropped.[1] Withdrawals commenced from 1985 and large scale scrappings commenced during 1991 and 1992.[1] Today four are in service with V/Line as carriage yard shunters, with others owned by freight operators Pacific National and El Zorro, or various railway preservation and heritage railway groups.
