[edit] Biography

Formed in 2002 by original members, Kresho Klarich (guitar and vocals), Walt Fleming (keyboard and piano),and Taylor Pierce (drums). Their music has become known for its distinct pirate metal sound, as a direct result of their use of the Bandoneon voice of a keyboard, along with their combination of death, power and some prog elements. The name "Verbal Deception" - comes from a phrase in the song Mentally Blind by the legendary Death (band) and apparently is a respectful nod to Chuck Schuldiner. Johnny Iocca replaced Pierce in the fall of 2003. Verbal Deception recorded a 6 track self titled EP in April 2004 and was favourably reviewed by the Metal Observer webzine in May of 2005, acknowledging the band’s “original melodies…in today’s uniformity”

Jordon Bourgeault replaced Iocca on drums in September of 2004 and the group remained a trio until they recruited bassist Terry Baldwin from the metal group Caveat to fill in the low end. An active performance schedule helped establish Verbal Deception's reputation within the underground metal scene and the band was quickly playing to full venues and community halls. They headed back into the studio in 2005 and 2006 to finish their debut full-length CD. With Terry's commitments to Caveat increasing, they then recruited Matt Petti on bass in April of 2006.

Aurum Aetus Piraticus (misconstrued Latin for the "Golden Age of Piracy") is an 11 song CD (with a hidden track) that was released late June 2006, by Scarab Productions. The CD was reviewed by Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles magazine (Canada) Lamentations of the Flame Princess (Finnish print zine) The Metal Observer, Blood Dawn magazine and Metal Maniacs, among others. Aurum Aetus Piraticus charted for 14 weeks on Chart (magazine)’s LOUD Charts and 13 weeks on the Earshot loud charts. It was also voted #1 Independant Album of 2006 by Metal Net Radio.

Verbal Deception have been featured in the following print mediums: Chart Magazine (Canada - August 16, 2006), Metal Hammer UK. (Feb 07), The Calgary Herald (June 22, 2006) and Beatroute Magazine (Calgary). Their music has also been featured in 2 of the venerable metal podcasts from Metal Injection and on the eclectic CBC Radio 3’s podcasts.

Verbal Deception completed a six city US tour in the summer of 2006 and were featured at the Hot August Metal Fest in Seattle in August 2007 while on tour with fellow Canadian black metal band Wolven Ancestry, Canadian death metal Band Nefastus Dies and American Black Metal band Ceremonial Castings. On Return from the tour, they played in Toronto with Finnish folk metal band Finntroll and a Calgary date with 3 Inches of Blood.
