Vengeance (2006) was the sixth annual Vengeance professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on June 25, 2006 at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina and was a Raw brand-exclusive event.[1] The official theme song was "Victim" by Eighteen Visions.[2]

The main event was a 5-on-2 Handicap tag team match between D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) and the Spirit Squad (Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nicky, and Mikey). Triple H and Michaels won the match after pinning Kenny and Mikey, respectively.[3] One of the predominant matches on the card was John Cena versus Sabu in an Extreme Lumberjack match, which featured superstars from the Raw and ECW brands at ringside. Cena won the match by forcing Sabu to submit with the STFU.[4] Another primary match on the undercard was Rob Van Dam versus Edge for the WWE Championship, which Van Dam won by pinfall after performing a Five-Star Frog Splash.[5]

Many of the existing feuds carried on after the event. Ric Flair continued to face Mick Foley, defeating him in an "I Quit" match two months later.[6] On the July 3 edition of Raw, Edge defeated Van Dam and Cena in a Triple Treat match to win the WWE Championship.[7] Following his win, Edge began an angle with Cena over the WWE Championship and defeated him to retain the title at SummerSlam.[8] After defeating The Spirit Squad, D-Generation X began feuding with The McMahons (Vince and Shane), which led to a match between the two teams at SummerSlam.[9]

[edit] Background

Triple H and Shawn Michaels (D-Generation X) who faced off against the Spirit Squad

The main feud heading into Vengeance was between D-Generation X and the Spirit Squad. This started with Shawn Michaels crossing paths with Mr. McMahon, who tried to screw Michaels. Mr. McMahon set Michaels in matches with his hand-picked team, the Spirit Squad.[10][11] At Backlash, Michaels suffered a loss, when the Spirit Squad interfered on behalf of The McMahons (Vince and Shane).[12] The following weeks on Raw, Michaels got revenge on both Vince McMahon and the Spirit Squad,[13][14] until the May 22, 2006 edition of Raw, where the Spirit Squad finally got their revenge on Michaels, when they faced him in a 5-on-1 handicap match.[15] The Spirit Squad kayfabe injured Michaels' left knee, after Spirit Squad member, Kenny, performed his finisher, the diving leg drop.[15] Then on orders of Vince McMahon, Triple H was to "break Shawn Michaels' skull", with his signature sledgehammer. Triple H failed to do what Mr. McMahon ordered and instead attacked the Spirit Squad, thus turning face.[15] On the June 5, 2006 edition of Raw, Triple H was supposed to become a member of Mr. McMahon's "Kiss My Ass Club", but Triple H backfired it when he Pedigreed Vince McMahon, laying him and Shane out in the ring.[16] On the June 12, 2006 edition of Raw, Vince McMahon announced that Triple H would face the Spirit Squad in a Gauntlet match, where he proclaimed that the Spirit Squad would re-enact their doings to Triple H similar to Shawn Michaels, in the month before.[17] Triple H got the best of the Spirit Squad, as the members beat him down, and grabbed a steel chair, similar to when Kenny assaulted Michaels, and inserting the chair on Triple H's left knee. Vince, however, informed the Spirit Squad not to attack his knee, but to insert the chair around Triple H's neck, but forgetting one member of the Squad, Mitch. Vince called him out, who throughout the match he called all four members one-by-one, instead Mitch was thrown out from the curtain by Shawn Michaels.[17] Marking the return of D-Generation X, the duo humiliated the Spirit Squad on the June 19, 2006 edition of Raw, when DX dumped green slime onto the group and later beating the Squad.[18]

The other main match on the card was between John Cena and Sabu. This feud cultivated at ECW One Night Stand, where Cena was booked to defend the WWE Championship against Rob Van Dam, after Van Dam cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, thus setting the match at One Night Stand. During the match, someone in a motorcycle helmet speared Cena through the table that was already set up in the corner of the ring. This individual turned out to be Edge. Van Dam seized the opportunity by hitting Cena with the Five-Star Frog Splash. As Van Dam went for the pin, the referee who was knocked out cold by Edge. Paul Heyman ran to the ring and counted the pinfall, awarding the victory to Van Dam.[19] The next night on Raw, an angered Cena stated that "At One Night Stand, I got an awakening as to how ECW does business,” said Cena. “According to them, anyone can show up, and when they get there, they can do whatever the hell they want. And you know what…I think I like it." Cena continued, “Tomorrow is the television debut of ECW, and I’m gonna show up. And when I do, I’m gonna do whatever the hell I wanna do. So, Paul Heyman, thank you for throwing this party tomorrow night because John Cena will have an ‘extremely’ good time.”[20] Cena kept his word when he came through the ECW crowd and attacked Edge, followed by a punch to Heyman, before being chased out by ECW Originals.[21] On the June 19, 2006 edition of Raw, Paul Heyman kept his word when he showed up, and Cena had a match with Mahoney, who arrived with Heyman. Cena applied the STFU forcing Mahoney to submit. As the match ended, Cena was attacked by ECW Original Sabu, who in the premiere of ECW won a 10 man Extreme Battle Royal (legalized weapons), where the winner would face Cena at Vengeance.[21] Sabu performed a Triple Jump Leg Drop on him, diving onto Cena and putting him through the announcers' table.[18] On the June 20, 2006 edition of ECW, Cena made his presence known to the ECW Locker room, where he changed the original match with Sabu to an Extreme Lumberjack match, in which Sabu accepted.[22]

One of the main undercard matches on the card was between Rob Van Dam and Edge for the WWE Championship. On the television premiere of ECW, Rob Van Dam was awarded the ECW World Heavyweight Championship by Paul Heyman, thus making Van Dam a double champion, by holding both the ECW and WWE title. Van Dam's celebration came to a stop when Edge interrupted Van Dam. Edge, who was the #1 contender for the WWE Championship,[23] told Van Dam that they both had a lot in common, referring to the fact that they both were Money in the Bank winners and successfully became WWE Champions. As Edge finished giving Van Dam some kind words, he speared Van Dam to send a message.[21] On the June 19, 2006 edition of Raw, Van Dam attacked Edge, moments after Edge beat Ric Flair.[18]

The event unofficially began with a dark match between Val Venis and Rob Conway. Venis pinned Conway for the win.[1][24] The first match was between Randy Orton and Kurt Angle. The match started off with Angle trying to hit a suplex on Orton off the edge of the ring. Orton, however, countered the suplex. After doing so, Angle gave Orton a belly to back suplex outside on the ring floor. The two fought in the ring, with one opponent out smarting the other. Orton attempted an RKO on Angle, but Angle reversed it, pushing Orton to the turnbuckle. Orton took the padding off the turnbuckle, leaving it exposed. Angle locked in the ankle lock, but Orton escaped it, dropping Angle to hit the exposed turnbuckle and delivering an RKO, in which Orton pinned Angle for the win.[25][26]

The second match was between Umaga and Eugene. Before the match began, Eugene brought "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Doink the Clown and Kamala down to the ring. Umaga started the match with a clothesline to Eugene. Eugene tried fighting off Umaga, but Umaga countered the attacks. The match ended quickly when Umaga hit Eugene with the Samoan Spike. As the match ended, Umaga attacked Jim Duggan and Doink the Clown.[26][27]

The third match was between Mick Foley and Ric Flair in a Two out of three falls match. Reversed moves were performed by both Flair and Foley. Foley managed to hit Flair with a double arm DDT. Foley then began taunting Flair and took out a Mr. Socko version of Flair. Foley tried to apply the Figure four Lock on Flair, but Flair countered it with an inside craddle over Foley to win the first fall. As the second match started, the match went to a different direction, when Foley grabbed a trash can from the under the ring to hit Flair with it. Flair, however, countered the attack, when he dropped Foley and applied the Figure four Lock. Foley got himself disqualified when he hit Flair with the trash can. The referee awarded Flair with winner of the match. Afterwards, Foley attacked Flair with a barb-wired bat, leaving Flair in a bloody mess.[26][28]

The fourth match was a Triple Threat match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship between Carlito, Johnny Nitro and Shelton Benjamin. The match saw Carlito perform a springboard moonsault on Nitro and Benjamin outside the ring. Nitro had the advantage in the match, which was followed by Benjamin, later proceeded by Carlito. Then all three men were fighting on the top ropes. Nitro hit a powerbomb on Benjamin, while Benjamin dropped Carlito, making both hit the mat. Nitro won the match, after he removed Carlito from the ring, moments after Carlito performed his Backcraker on Benjamin, and Nitro getting the cover on Benjamin.[26][29]

The fifth match was between Edge and Rob Van Dam for the WWE Championship. Moments into the match, Edge maneuvered a sunset flip powerbomb on Van Dam outside the ring. Van Dam, however, managed to hit a crossbody on Edge inside the ring, resulting in the two landing on the ring floor. Both Van Dam and Edge reversed moves, until Van Dam kicked the referee. Edge took an advantage of the situation, as he was given the WWE title by Lita, who accompanied Edge to the ring. Edge tried to hit Van Dam with the title, but Van Dam managed to hit the Van Daminator on the title, as it hit Edge in the face. Edge got back in the match as he attempted a spear on Van Dam, while Lita held onto a chair. As Edge went for a spear, Van Dam moved out of the way, and Edge ended up hitting his head on the chair. Van Dam pinned Edge after performing the Five-Star Frog Splash.[26][30]

The sixth match was between Kane and "Impostor Kane". The match started with Impostor Kane trying to perform Kane's fire pyro, instead took a right hand. Impostor Kane then side walk slammed Original Kane. Then Kane proceeded by giving the Impostor a powerslam. As Impostor Kane tried chokeslamming Kane, Kane reversed into a DDT. As Kane tried to maneuver a move off the top rope, he was caught by Impostor Kane and chokeslammed. Impostor Kane won the match after he pinned Kane.[26][31]

The seventh match was between Sabu and John Cena in a Extreme Lumberjack match. Before the match started, the ECW and RAW lumberjacks made their way to ringside. The match began with Cena hitting a suplex on Sabu and throwing him to the RAW lumberjacks, where they attacked Sabu and sent him back into the ring. Sabu repeated Cena's actions he did, as to sending Cena out the ring to the ECW lumberjacks, there The Sandman hit Cena with a Kendo stick. Throughout the match, Sabu kept his lead on Cena, up until Cena blocked Sabu's flying crossbody. Afterwards, the ECW and RAW lumberjacks started brawling at ringside. Sabu, however, got the advantage over Cena, when he hit Cena with a steel chair, after Cena performed an FU on Stevie Richards. The ECW lumberjacks had Cena's head set in a table, where Sabu was to attempt a high-flying move, but the RAW roster interfered, giving the opportunity to Cena as he hit Sabu with the Kendo stick in mid-air. Cena performed an FU on Sabu, after he dropped Sabu in a table at ringside, concluding with Cena winning, after Sabu submitted to the STFU.[4][26]

The main event was a 5-on-2 Handicap tag team match between D-Generation X (DX) (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) versus the Spirit Squad (Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nick, and Mikey. The match was controlled by DX, but Spirit Squad member, Johnny, nailed Shawn Michaels with an enzuigiri. Each member, took the upper hand over Michaels. Until, Michaels countered a double team maneuver and able to hit a double DDT. After the events, Michaels tagged in Triple H, which led him to take the upper hand in the match. The match was concluded with Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Kenny and Michaels hitting Sweet Chin Music to Mikey, which led to both DX members going for the cover and picking up the victory. As the match came to a close, three remaining Squad members tried attacking DX, but were unsuccessful in doing so, as they were either met with a superkick or Pedigree.[3][26]

[edit] Aftermath

On the July 15 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, D-Generation X (DX) (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) defeated the Spirit Squad in a 5 on 2 Elimination match.[32] The McMahons (Vince and Shane McMahon) proceeded to feud with DX, as they became frustrated with DX's antics. Vince then booked a tag team match, in which he would team up with Shane to take on DX at SummerSlam.[9] Before the match got on its way, the Spirit Squad, Mr. Kennedy, William Regal, Finlay and The Big Show all interfered on behalf of the McMahons.[33] DX, however, won the match.[33]

On the July 3 edition of Raw, a Triple Threat match was set for the WWE Championship between Rob Van Dam, Edge and John Cena, after Van Dam made the stipulation.[7] At the end of the show, Edge won the match, after he hit Cena with the title and pinned Van Dam for the win.[7] The following night on ECW, Van Dam lost the ECW World Heavyweight Championship to The Big Show. Big Show got assistance from Paul Heyman, who declined to make the three-count for Van Dam, but instead gave the count to Big Show.[34] Later on WWE.com, Heyman suspended Van Dam for thirty days without giving a reason; This angle was written after WWE suspended Van Dam for thirty days as a result of his recent drug possession arrest.[35][36]

At SummerSlam, a match was booked between Cena and Edge for the WWE Championship. The stipulation of the match was that if Edge disqualified himself, he would have lost the WWE title, prior to the month before at Saturday Night's Main Event, where Edge and Cena faced-off, in which Cena won by disqualification, after Lita interfered throughout the match.[32] Edge, however, retained the title after he hit Cena with a pair of brass knuckles.[8]

Ric Flair and Mick Foley continued their feud, as the two were scheduled in an "I Quit" match at SummerSlam. As the challenge was made by Foley to make it an "I Quit" match, as the original challenge was a Hardcore match.[37] At SummerSlam, Foley quit the match, after Flair threatened to hit Melina with a barbed wire bat.[6][38]
