Valerio Zurlini (19 March 1926 - 28 October 1982) was an Italian film director.
Zurlini was born in Bologna. In 1958 he wrote the script for Alberto Lattuada's Guendalina, which received the Nastro d'Argento for Best Script.
After two films, he filmed a successful intimist drama starring Claudia Cardinale, Girl with a Suitcase, which made Cardinale a star in Italy.
With his next film, Family Diary, Zurlini won the Leone d'Oro at the Venice Film Festival.
Star and producer Alain Delon had troubles with Zurlini with the editing and the director's cut of the film they made together, La prima notte di quiete.
His last film, based on the famous Dino Buzzati novel The Desert of the Tartars , won the David di Donatello award for best film.
Some of his most known films have been restored and released on DVD in both the USA and France. He died in Verona in 1982.
