The UST Growling Tigers is the varsity team of University of Santo Tomas in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. Originally named as the Glowing Goldies, the name had been changed starting at the 1992-93 season.
The Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas holds the most number of senior general championships in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, 35 championships in the 61 seasons that the title was awarded. With a formidable athletic program in all sporting events (Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Chess, Fencing, Football, Judo, Mountain Climbing, Rowing, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, Track and Field, Volleyball), the University also takes part in various sports leagues such as Home and Away Invitational League, Collegiate Champion's League, Shakey's V League, UNIgames, etc
The junior teams are the UST High School Tiger Cubs (to differentiate them with the San Beda Red Cubs), and the Tigresses. The Juniors teams have won ten general championships in their division.

[edit] Mascot and colors
The gold and white colors came from the university's pontifical status (the flag of Vatican City is colored gold and white), while the change from "Glowing Goldies" to "Growling Tigers" came after the University of the Philippines hosting of the opening ceremonies of the 1991-92 season where UST was represented by an old Dominican friar with band-aids (the Glowing Goldies can't be represented concretely). This has brought embarrassment and a search for a new mascot was held. Athletic director Felicitas Francisco suggested to use the tiger due to its gold and white colors. Francisco still dons her tiger-stripes coat when she attends UST's playoff games.
When it was UST's turn to host for the 1992-93 season, the new growling tiger mascot debuted in the opening ceremonies.
It should be noted that Manila Central University used the tiger mascot (with purple and gold colors) in the UAAP when it joined in 1952; it withdrew from the UAAP and is currently inactive in intercollegiate athletics.
[edit] Basketball
[edit] History
The men's basketball team is tied with UE Red Warriors having the second most number of titles in UAAP basketball, with eighteen, trailing to the FEU Tamaraws, having the most number of basketball championships with nineteen. The UST Growling Tigers is a record holder including a four-year run as champions, from the 1993-94 season, where they've swept the elimination round with an immaculate 14-0 record (automatic champions), up to the 1996-97 season, where they have beaten the La Salle Green Archers for the third consecutive Finals series. The Tigers were led by coach Aric del Rosario from the 1992-93 season up to the 2003-04 season.
From 1964 to 1971, UST met the UE Red Warriors eight times, with the Warriors winning seven encounters. UST contested every championship game from the resumption of games after the Pacific War on 1946 up to 1956. UST also won one NCAA championship, in 1930.
The Tiger Cubs also have a successful basketball program, with Finals series against the Ateneo Blue Eaglets 11 times since 1986. The Tigresses have the most number of women's championships, with ten. The latest coming at the 2006 season, at the expense of the FEU Lady Tamaraws.
On the 1994 season, the men's, women's and juniors' teams won all three UAAP championships in basketball, the only time it had happened in UAAP history (especially during the recent 69th UAAP season, together with their battlecry: "Re-live 96 at Season 69!").
On the 2006 season, the Men's and Women's team captured the basketball championships.

The UST Golden Sox is one of the top baseball teams in the UAAP, having won two (2005, 2007) of the last four titles in four straight finals appearances since 2004. Sometimes dubbed as the Golden Sox, they have one of the top pitching prospects in the country in Jonjon Robles, who won the UAAP MVP last season after leading them to the title. He is also a multi-time Best Pitcher Awardee.
UST is currently well represented by the Makati Mariners squad in the Baseball Philippines, even reaching the finals of the tournament's pilot series.
[edit] Cheerdance
The pep squad, the UST Yellow Jackets, and the official dance troupe, the Salinggawi Dance Troupe have won the UAAP Cheerdance Competition a league-leading eight times and holds the record for the longest championship run for five consecutive years (2002 to 2006). Their closest rival is the UP Pep Squad, which has been a consistent runner-up until 2007 when they snatched the title by a very thin margin from the Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which finished second.
