[edit] Model

Not sure where to work this in, a model of a battleship, known as Illinois was on display at the World's Columbian Exposition (1893 Chicago World's fair). Made of brick and costing over $100,000 to make, it sounds pretty impressive. It doesn't bear much resemblance to the actual Illinois BB-7, I think it was modeled after an Indiana class battleship. Is this something worth including? The image is from 1893, so its PD-US and I think it could be used here. --Dual Freq (talk) 03:59, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Ships bell from the brick model Illinois at the 1893 Worlds fair was donated to BB-7 by the city of Chicago c.1900. "Chicago to Lose its Battleship Relic" The Sioux Valley News. Correctionville, Iowa. Thursday, September 20, 1900. Page 3. --Dual Freq (talk) 04:45, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Notes

  • Know as Battleship number 7 rather than BB-7.
  • Part of the 1896 class of ships.
  • Collided with USS Missouri 1904, after Missouri's steering gear failed causing the ship to swerve into Illinois' aft section. flooded compartments and forced dry docking at the New York navy yard (Brooklyn). Collision occurred March 9, 1904, 30 miles off Guantanamo, Cuba. Sailed to dry dock on own power, one prop. only. --Dual Freq (talk) 03:54, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
