I'm actually quite impressed with the sheer volume of the content. Sometimes if there is too much content in a page, you can create subpages (ie USS America (CV-66)/Vietnam)... On 25 September, Rear Admiral J. O. Cobb broke his flag as Commander, Carrier Division 2. What does "broke his flag" mean? - Brian Kendig 01:27, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

"Took command" - etymology is from admiral's flag being hoisted and then flying (breaking) free, I think. Stan 05:25, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Yes, Stan's right. When an admiral takes command, he gives the order to "break my flag". Now I have to go look up that etymology. Jinian 14:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Checking my copy of Admiral WH Smyth's Sailor's Word-Book: An Alphabetical Digest of Nautical Terms (1867), this use is not included. The closest is "Breaking Out" meaning breaking out the wares in the hold, under legal provision. One might conjecture that an admiral's flag was held in the hold until he took command, and therefore his flag was broken out. Jinian 18:30, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Wow...so much of this is a blatant rip off. I did a google search of "proceeded thence to Portsmouth, England" and came up with this. [1]

So what did you think this statement at the bottom of the article means?

We're completely upfront about using DANFS's public domain text, hundreds of our ship articles do likewise (look at the "what links here" from the DANFS article to get a list). Can't be plagiarism if you credit your source! Stan 22:22, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm new to wikipedia: I corrected the details of the sinking based on the freedom of information act response cited at http://www.cvn78.com/ The ship was sunk much deeper and further offshore than originally reported. -barry.evans (at the ever friend google gmail domain)

CVN78.Com is my site and I served aboard America between 1/81 and 8/83. I updated the information regarding the exact position of the sinking as given by responses from the Department of the Navy to my FOIA Requests. A map of the location as well as the actual ship to shore transmission is also on the site. I have not quite figured out how to create a link in this site. - Tom

June 8th 1984 has the America relieving the Kitty Hawk in the IO. I was there, and unless my memory is going, we relieved the Enterprise.

I would like to see some mention of the deployments from 1993-1995 to include operations off of Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti and the Persian Gulf. If I had sources, I would include it myself. However, I only have my memory. --JAYMEDINC 19:33, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
