[edit] Notability & Distinctiveness

Please forgive me if this isn't the proper format for the discussion page...I am a total newbie!

The UO Investment Group is notable because it manages money in a unique way. The process and group is managed by students and has enjoyed a significant level of success that has been described, discussed and cited in several media sources. To verify notability and significance, we can locate and reference reliable and independent sources (I'm specifically thinking of CNN, Wall Street Journal, etc).

An article on the UO Investment Group could be categorized with "University of Oregon", "Lundquist College of Business", and/or "Investment Club" (which I see it already is). We should edit the article to include a distinction between the sources of the UOIG's portfolios and typical sources for investment clubs; i.e. no UOIG member has put money into and no one gets money out of it. UOIG also makes no claims about investment strategies and has no plans to sell a book (e.g. Beardstown Ladies).

You got the format right :) On Wikipedia, notability is determined by our notability criteria. Whether or not you think UOIG is notable, that notability must be shown in the article by providing citations to reliable third-party sources. If there are indeed non-trivial mentions in CNN, Wall Street Journal, etc. that should go a long way toward showing notability.
Here are some general notes for those working on this article. Please read our conflict of interest guidelines and please do not remove maintenance tags without addressing the issue or an explanation in the edit summary. The tone and advertising content were removed which was a big improvement and it was OK that those tags were removed. But if you don't know what "cleanup" or "wikify" mean in a Wikipedia context, please do not remove them. You can check out the page history and the page diffs to see my most recent edits, which cleaned up and wikified the article. Katr67 (talk) 00:52, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

The UOIG were interviewed by CNNMoney in 2003. I think i might be able to locate the file and post it on the web somewhere. The 2 persons from UOIG who were interviewed were Larry Dann, faculty advisor to the UOIG and Ben Schuman, then Director of Operations of the group. I have sourced an article from thestreet.com. Is that sufficient to support the notability of this article? Charlests (talk) 15:20, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
