[edit] Recommend Link Removal
User:Ahering@cogeco.ca added a link on Sept 11, 2006 to a website on geocities.com that he manages and controls that appears to represent Local 6520 (Canada). This link should be removed because it does not conform to Wikipedia's standards Wikipedia:External_links.
Wikipedia states the following links should be added.
1. "Articles about any organization, person, web site, or other entity should link to the official site if there is one." This article already contains links to 2 "official" websites (US and Canada). Local 6520 is listed along with many other locals in the official Canadian website and articles about it's unionization efforts are contained therein.
Wikipedia states that the following links should be avoided.
1. "Any site that does not provide a unique resource". Nothing on Achim's website offers any unique information. (Information on Telespectrum, the organization of 450 workers out of 190000 in Canada, is already under official Canadian site)
2. "A website that you own or maintain". User Achim is the webmaster of this site and maintains it. Guidelines are clear on the avoidance of this type of link. Wikipedia also states "If it is relevant and informative, mention it on the talk page and let other — neutral — Wikipedia editors decide whether to add the link." Achim did not reveal his control of this site nor post it here for discussion prior to adding it to the article.
3. "Links that are added to promote a site". User Achim has added this same link to this and other articles in a clear attempt to promote his own website.
4. "Links that are added with objectionable amounts of advertising". Although this is subjective, Achim's website contains prominent advertising that remains static while user is forced to scroll down the page to obtain further (but limited) information regarding this local. None of the official sites contain this type and amount of advertising.
I recommend this link be removed and open this for other editorial discussion.Calltech 14:47, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Agree with removal of link, there's no need for links to every individual local union, which is what this would turn into if such were allowed. Seraphimblade 15:59, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree with the above as well - it's the thin edge of the wedge. If you let one local union listing you will end up with reason to have all of them, and this isn't a link directory. Robovski 05:42, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Two of the "See Also" links are now listed above as {{Main}} tags, and have been removed under "See Also" now that they are above. However, there are several articles now on presidents of the USW, and these tend to outline the history of the union. These have now been added in the "See Also" section, as they are not referred to either in inline Wiki links or with {{Main}} tags. - Tim1965 17:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
