In addition to the note below (copied from the talk page) I claim the following fair-use rationale:

Non-free / fair use media rationale - non-free logo for University of Bristol
Description

This is a logo owned by University of Bristol for University of Bristol.

Source

The logo is from the http://www.bristol.ac.uk website.http://www.bristol.ac.uk/visualidentity/logodownloads.html

Article

University of Bristol

Portion used

All

Low resolution?

Yes, this is the only resolution made available in MediaWiki-accepted format..

Purpose of use

The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing University of Bristol, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey.

Replaceable?

Because it is a logo there is almost certainly no free equivalent. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary.

Other information
  1. Additionally to being used in the infobox, it is also discussed separately in a section of the article.
  2. Its use in this article in no way diminishes the copyright holder's ability to profit from their rights or to use the work in any way they choose.
  3. Also see the information at #Additionally... below, which strengthens the fair-use claim where it allows its use for articles related to the University.

[edit] Additionally...

I have an email sent to me today from Eve MacFarlane, Publications Manager, University of Bristol Campaigns and Alumni Relations (Senate House, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol BS8 1TH) confirming that so long as the university logo is used in full, that is, with the words alongside the emblem, there is no copyright problem with its use by Wikipedia for such purposes as the article about the university and mention of graduates thereof (which I reckon includes user pages of users who are among its graduates). Note: This logo image is not to be altered. The university will allow use on Wikipedia with reference to the university of the image comprising the emblem and the words, but not alteration to the emblem alone (as has happened – see history), which the university will not allow, considering it "chopping the logo in half, as the words are an integral part of the logo". See discussion page for this page.
