[edit] Tyra Was A Supermodel
A supermodel is a highly-paid elite fashion model who usually has a worldwide reputation and often a background in haute couture and commercial modeling. The term took hold in the popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s. (There is a supermodel)
Application The elite models who are given the appellation of "supermodel" often share similar traits. These models are reputable in the fashion industry. They usually work for top fashion designers and labels. They have multi-million dollar contracts, endorsements and campaigns. They have branded themselves to be household names, having worldwide recognition associated to their modeling profession.[2][3][4][5] These models have graced the covers of various magazines. Claudia Schiffer stated, "In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognise the girls."[6][7] The true supermodels were known on a first-name basis in the fashion industry.[8]
The term "supermodel" took hold in the popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s. However, according to Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women by Michael Gross, the first known use of the term "supermodel" was in the 1940s by an agent named Clyde Matthew Dessner in a "how-to" book he wrote about modeling.[9]
Janice Dickinson has frequently laid claim to being the originator of the term. In an interview with ET, Janice Dickinson claimed to have coined the term "supermodel" back in 1979, when she was taking every job available. According to her, her agent Monique Pilar of Elite Modeling Agency, asked her, "Janice, who do you think you are? Superman?". She replied saying, "No... I'm a supermodel, honey, and you will refer to me as a supermodel and you will start a supermodel division." Dickinson also claimed to be the first supermodel, "because I did everything".[10] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.38.211.144 (talk) 06:44, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Her Weight
I'm having a hard time believing that she weighs 185lbs. I know she is one of the curvy models but 185lbs is ridiculous.
- It may not be that far off. I'm 5'10", skinny, male, and weigh somewhere around 155lbs. Add a few pounds for each breast and you're already up to 160-165. Add in the weight from wider hips and the extra bone mass and tissue that goes with that, there's another what? Say 10 lbs.? Now you're in the 170-175 range. Add a few morebxjzbsbs pounds for muscle mass since I'm betting that she works out a couple times a week at least which is a couple times more than me and you're right in the neighborhood. Dismas|(talk) 11:15, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Very scientific, Dismas. Oldkinderhook 17:42, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Well, somebody changed her weight again. This is probably just a guessing game. I don't think supermodels or any sane celebrity will ever disclose their weight.
- Can someone clean up the weight section? It's lacking citations and is grammatically confusing Xi0xioi0ix 08:00, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Um breasts won't weigh even a kilogram, let alone 5!
An average sized breast weighs about 3 lbs. A friend of mine with HUGE breasts (26 DDD) recently had a breast reduction in which 2 lbs were removed from each breast, which brought her down to a 26 D. Tyra's breasts aren't very large, so guessing her breasts weigh 5 lbs each is inaccurate. 71.228.132.242 07:46, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Hey so if being a little heavy doesn't matter, why did she make a big deal of it and then went and lost the weight anyway? Why not just keep it on naturally?she weighted 200 lb.

[edit] Gay Icon Project
In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 20:06, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- 2 points:
- Why is "Gay Icon" mentioned here? Is Tyra gay?
- Does anyone have any information about the "Michael Award"? The article says Tyra won it, but I find nothing about that award existing for real on Google. Is that a crapfact?Merecat 06:35, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

- Gay Icon does not mean the person is gay. Madonna and Cher are huge gay icons, but both are heterosexual. --Speakslowly 04:50, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Music Career
Is it really appropriate to say that Tyra recorded her "first hit single"? Thats a bit generous, don't you think? I'm all for giving credit where credit is due, but seriously... [XI]I like pie!
- What is her net worth? In the article it says 8.8 million. But the caption says 52 M.
-
-
- It says in the article that her album is coming soon, but as I last understood she dropped that career move and has since focused on her talk show. --Speakslowly 04:50, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Did/When did Tyra Banks have cosmetic surgery? Because there is a huge difference in her looks between cycle 1 and 7 of ANTM. Unnaturally different. --Chris Griswold (☎☓) 20:38, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
She has lost and gained weight in the course of the show. I know that seems like a stupid answer, but it can make a difference. She says she has never gotten cosmetic surgery (she says this quite often on her talk show.) Skin Crawl 03:56, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Can we get an exact date on when she was measured, as well as who or what group measured her? Also, it would be great to have more measurements from later dates, to document her growth as a model. Zaphraud 19:43, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

- Tyra banks dated Tyler Perry they began dating spring 2006 they are no longer together

[edit] Supermodel vs Model
Tyra Banks is probably ground zero for the Supermodel or Not a Supermodel debate, so I don't think it is appropriate to refer to her as such in the article. Her High Fashion resume is virtually non-existent. I'd describe her as nothing more than a glorified bikini and bra model, but I think that's a bit too subjective too. Let's just leave it at "model", list her achievments, and let the people decide whether or not she deserves the "Supermodel" moniker.Bogan444 22:46, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- If you look at the Wikipedia Supermodel page, Tyra Banks is listed there. Being a supermodel does not solely mean having lots of high fashion modelling experience, although I would have to say that she probably does differ from the norm in that sense. I would consider her a supermodel because she was a famous model, known for solely her modelling before she did all that reality TV. Many other sources call her a supermodel; just by Googling "Tyra Banks supermodel", you get many articles (not just fan sites) calling Banks a supermodel, including CNN, ABC News, MSNBC, etc.. And to be honest, this is the first time I've heard anyone object (on Wikipedia) to her being called a supermodel. SKS2K6 23:47, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
-
- with all due respect, your definition of "supermodel" isn't all that demanding. Essentially, it would cover almost any famous model. I'm well aware that Banks is sometimes referred to as a "Supermodel", but that tells us nothing as all the models want to be referred to as "Supermodels" and have their people and trolls in the media constantly pimping that angle. And the "supermodel/not a supermodel" debate is quite real. Howard Stern's sound technician, Fred Norris, famously brought the issue to the public forefront when he vigorously disputed the use of the term with regards to Carol Alt during her on air appearance. I think what we need to do as a community is come up with a definition of "Supermodel" first, with objective criteria, and then apply that criteria to a particular model.Bogan444 20:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- When I orginally changed it back to "supermodel," it was because I was easily able to find three major media sources (and I stopped at three, I could have easily added more) that refer to Banks as a "supermodel." She is one of the most famous models in the world and, high fashion questions aside, the overwhelming public perception of Banks is that she is a supermodel. Perhaps you could cite some equally high profile sources that argue that Banks is not a supermodel? Also, while the "supermodel vs model" debate may be real, your Fred Norris example is actually referring to Carol Alt. I don't see how this strengthens your case regarding Banks. janejellyroll 03:25, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Her striking looks and business savvy extended to several offers, including assignments with Ralph Lauren and various magazine covers (over 20 to be exact), including Sports Illustrated and most notably GQ, where Banks became the first black woman ever to grace the cover. In addition to various ads and runway gigs, Banks decided to branch out into feature films, scoring a few high-profile gigs, starring as Omar Epps' love interest in John Singleton's racially charged drama Higher Learning (1995) and snagging a stint opposite Will Smith on TV's The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. These breakout roles led to more film work, including a British sexploitation film called Inferno and a comic turn in 1999's Love Stinks with actors French Stewart and Bill Bellamy. In 2000, Banks landed a high-profile gig in the critically dismissed but lively Jerry Bruckheimer production Coyote Ugly, playing a sexy barmaid in a role that showcased all of her assets in one tidy package.
Continuing her dual career, Banks' devotion to environmental issues has shown the world her ambition to be a role model as well. - I have to agree I dont think Tyra is a supermodel either if the all movie guide is right shes only done 20 covers 20!!! While other supermodels have cracked a hundred. Besides lets be objective if it wasnt for ANTM and her Tyra Show she probably wouldnt be considered a supermodel. I mean besides being the first black woman on CQ and being a former Victorias Secret Angel she hasnt done that much. I mean I respect I think she is intelligent and charitable but not a supermodel.
You idiot she know as a supermodel long before that, she less calls then other girls because her proud curvy look (then only gaining popularity), & be the black supermodel (for that time) & facing comparsion to longtime runway supermodel Ms. N Campbell. The only that debate it are a few fashion designers that think they put people down. We known her name on runway long before her being on tv. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.38.211.144 (talk) 06:48, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

-->Tyra Banks loves herself more than anything in this world. It is especially noticeable on her Talk Show when she offers information about herself so that someone else can compliment her. It is actually quite disgraceful. She constantly pats herself on the back for doing things that anyone would do. She is slowly aging and becoming even more alien looking than she was in her "prime".
[edit] Tyra or Tyra Banks
In the episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air called "Where There's A Will, There's A Way" she is credited simply as "Tyra". Is this the name she went by back then? Sort of like Cher, Madonna, Bono or Tyrese? 156.34.216.51 02:54, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

- The article was semi-protected due to mass vandalism in July. Basically, unregistered and new users can't edit. I've added the appropriate tag there to let people know about this. As for the "hostess"/"host" content, it's really a case of gender specificity in this case; I don't care enough either way, personally. - Prior to graduating in 1991, she wanted to give modeling a try. She applied and was accepted at Loyola Marymount University, that Elite modeling agency gave the 17-year-old, her first modeling job. Afterwards, she had been rejected many times for modeling assignments, which led her to drop out of college so quickly.[citation needed]
doesnt make sense. She wasnt rejected by modelling agencies. She was successful which is why she didnt go to Loyola Marymount University. & if T was rejected for modelling assignments, what is the correlation between that and college? Being rejected for modeling would have allowed her to go to college..u follow me? Pls fix it. Thx.

I use wikipedia for almost every research i do. i notice something though. i could be wrong but it looks like articles about blacks or african americans are written with language like " she claims" "he insists" , "he asserts". so i get the impression that the biographies of african americans are written as if the writer does not really recognize and repect the person in question. please address it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.71.221 (talk) 20:36, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is a good source of information on pop culture but it is seriously not a reliable reference tool. If you cited Wikipedia, and only Wikipedia, in the courses I teach, you'd get an "F". The content can change daily on some pages, writing done and undone and then redone. It's hardly an encyclopedia which is fact-checked. This doesn't directly address your question about the tone of the writing but it's a fact that for most pages, any registered user can rewrite the copy to something you prefer. The entry might not stay the way you wrote it for very long which is one of the many reasons I'd question using it as a research tool, at least for academic topics.
