Currently, the TRTS in Taipei is the only operational rapid transit system in Taiwan. However, the Red Line of the KMRT in Kaohsiung is expected to commence operation in the second half of 2007. Several other cities in Taiwan, including Taichung, are also planning rapid transit systems.
[edit] High speed rail
The Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) commenced operations on January 5, 2007, after some delays in 2006. The THSR connects Taipei City in the northeast of the island of Taiwan to Kaohsiung City in the southwest. The journey time is about 90 minutes instead of the 4 hours by conventional rail. 30 Shinkansen sets Class 700T, are running on the current 345 km HSL, Taipei Main station, Banciao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Zuoying near Kaoshiung, are openned stations in 2007. In the future, 4 new stations will receive trains calling, Songshan in north Taipei suburb, Miaoli, Changhua and Yunlin. In 2008 THSR will increase trains numbers to 88, per a day in each way.
Shinkansen 700 T is very similar as Japanese 700 Nozomi. Its 12 cars set,9 power cars and 3 trailers, speed limit is 300 km/h, gauge is standard 1435 mm, OCS power 25 kV AC 60Hz.
