This is the obverse of an 1876 Trade dollar. It is derived from an auction scan from Heritage Auction Galleries [1]. The coin design is in the public domain, and, per WP:IUP: "Also note that in the United States, reproductions of two-dimensional artwork which is in the public domain because of age do not generate a new copyright — for example, a straight-on photograph of the Mona Lisa would not be considered copyrighted (see Bridgeman v. Corel). Scans of images alone do not generate new copyrights — they merely inherit the copyright status of the image they are reproducing." Since this is simply a straight-on photo or scan, with no creative aspect involved, it should not be subject to copyright as per this precedent.
I added a bit of padding (so obverse and reverse images would be the same size) and removed the white background with GIMP. In the unlikely event that either of these minor manipulations qualifies my edited image for a new copyright status, I hereby disclaim that copyright and release this work into the public domain.
