[edit] Legal definition of the term township in South Africa

What exactly is the definition of the term township in South Africa? 168.209.98.35 14:30, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure about legalities, but I'll quote you the Oxford Dictionary of South African English (2002) - 'township, n. (in South Africa) a suburb or city of predominantly black occupation, formerly officially designated for black occupation by apartheid legislation.' Joziboy 4 March 2006, 20:01 (UTC)
they appear to be cadastral units for use on land titles, along with "erf" - see google [1] --Astrokey44 21:49, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NPOV

I think the line Many townships in South Africa experienced (sometimes violent) protests against a perceived lack of service delivery in 2005 and 2006 [1]. is POV. The qualifier "perceived" erodes the creditibility of the protesters who faced real problems, not perceived problems. This section is important to the article and could use more fleshing out in addition to being rewritten for NPOV. --65.97.22.181 15:53, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

The article linked to at the bottom has almost zero information regarding this and is a poor source. Another article, POV or not, really needs to be found because this article, like most on Wikipedia, has almost no citation or documentation. JD79 15:42, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Here is the text that was NPOV:

Many townships in South Africa experienced (sometimes violent) protests against a perceived lack of service delivery in 2005 and 2006 [2].

I think it needs to be re-written, in a more factual form, before being re-included in the article. I've removed the POV tag, too. -Kieran 12:13, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
