Travelers of all sorts from the mainland USA do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the USA and travelers from USA points of origin do not pass through customs and do not need to present a passport. Nor do travelers from Puerto Rico need to pass through customs on the way to the mainland USA. I can personally verify this as a recent (6 March 2007 to 11 March 2007) visitor to Puerto Rico from the mainland, traveling with my family and several friends.
I'd hate for anyone to miss out on a wonderful travel destination due to inaccurate information regarding the need for a passport.
