Tjaarda has worked for many well-known Italian coachbuilders, for instance Ghia, Pininfarina and Italdesign. Among his car designs the De Tomaso Pantera is probably the most renowned, but the Fiat 124 Spider and the De Tomaso Deauville are also Tjaarda-styled.
Tom is the son of the Dutch-American auto designer Joop Tjaarda van Starkenberg (1897–1962), who renamed himself John Tjaarda on coming to the U.S. in 1923.
