Tirano is a town in Valtellina, located in the province of Sondrio, Northern Italy. It has about 9,044 inhabitants and is adjacent to the Switzerland-Italy boundary. Tirano has two neighboring railway stations. One is operated by Ferrovie dello Stato, the state railway company, and connects Tirano with Sondrio, Lecco and Milano. The other is operated by the Rhaetian Railway and used mainly to take tourists and skiers to St. Moritz, Pontresina, or to various ski areas via the Bernina Pass. River Adda flows through Tirano.

Located nearby is the Catholic shrine of the Madonna di Tirano, a major tourist attraction. The shrine is dedicated to the appearance of the Blessed Mother to Mario Degli Omodei on September 29th, 1504, an event religious pilgrims credit with ending a pestilence.
