Throughout his youth, Kennedy played for a variety of travel league hockey teams, distinguishing himself and his teams with his abilities and skills. He played several years of his youth career with the Buffalo Regals where he led the team with current Michigan State teammate Chris Mueller. He played for several years on the Western Division’s hockey team in the Empire State Games where his teams won gold in 2002 and 2003. In 2003, in a reflection of his talents Tim Kennedy was offered a contract with the OHL. Conscious of his NCAA eligibility he declined and was later drafted by the Sioux City Musketeers, a team in the United States Hockey League, the top major junior league for elite hockey players who can maintain the NCAA eligibility. After joining, Kennedy made an immediate impact on his team and the league and was actively recruited by major college hockey programs including Colorado State, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Boston College. Ultimately he accepted a scholarship to Michigan State, where he is playing hockey under a full scholarship. He has become a fan favorite. Kennedy was a member of Michigan State's 2007 NCAA Championship team where he contributed one goal in the final game against Boston College and assisted Justin Abdelkader's game winning goal.
