I'm a civil engineer, descended from 17th century Plymouth Colony Pilgrims and Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritans, and raised in an 18th century Maine connected farm with unheated bedrooms. I joined the United States Navy for the duration of the Vietnam War, and taught at the University of Illinois before moving to San Francisco.
