The 2008 Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix was the fourth round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series season. It took place at Miller Motorsports Park, Utah on May 18, 2008.
[edit] Report
[edit] Qualifying
Two qualifying sessions were held on Thursday, with the grand tourer and Le Mans Prototype classes running in separate sessions of 25 minutes each. The GT cars ran first, quickly led by the two GT1 class Corvettes. Both cars ran only three laps before returning to the pits, satisfied with their times. Jan Magnussen was the faster of the two in the #3 entry at 1:56.539. The Bell Motorsports Aston Martin was approximately four seconds behind the Corvettes.
In GT2, the #45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche of Jörg Bergmeister initially broke the GT2 class lap record, but Jaime Melo reset the record again with a 2:00.945 lap time that would not be beaten before the session ended. Behind the Risi Competizione Ferrari another Flying Lizard Porsche qualified second, while Farnbacher-Loles was third. The Robinson Racing Ford GT did not attempt qualifying due to a small fire, while the Corsa Motorsports Ferrari chose not to participate due to difficulties with their Hankook tires.
Prototype qualifying followed with the #2 Audi of Lucas Luhr earning provisional pole, breaking the overall qualifying record. This was then broken by Allan McNish in the #1 Audi, then again by the #07 Peugeot of Stéphane Sarrazin with a 1:43.117. Immediately after the lap of Sarrazin, an accident by the LMP2 B-K Motorsport's Mazda forced qualifying to be stopped. The session was eventually ended due to the amount of clean-up necessary for the accident.
In the LMP2 class, several cars had not entered the track for qualifying when the accident occured, leaving them without a lap time when the session was ended. This included both Penske Racing Porsches, all three Acura teams, and the Horag Porsche. This left the two Dyson Racing Porsches on LMP2 pole, Guy Smith setting the faster of the two times at 1:46.145. The B-K Mazda had set the third fastest lap time in the class before its accident.
Following qualifying, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) decided that the qualifying times would be nullified due to the accident. IMSA rules stated that if either of the two qualifying sessions ran for less than ten minutes, that qualifying would be cancelled and the starting grid would instead be set based on the fastest lap times from the previous three practice sessions.
This change put the #1 Audi back on pole position, although the Peugeot remained on the front row. The #7 Penske Porsche was also promoted to the LMP2 pole. In GT1 and GT2 the pole winners remained the same, but the order for the rest of the field was shuffled.[1] Although Corsa Motorsports were in the field thanks to their practice times, the team eventually withdrew from the event over continued concerns over their tires.
