"The Root of All Evil" is the first song of the eighth Dream Theater studio album, Octavarium. It is the third installment in the Alcoholics Anonymous suite, written by Mike Portnoy. Specifically, it covers the 6th and 7th steps of the 12-step AA program. It is preceded by "Glass Prison" (from the album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence) and "This Dying Soul" (from the album Train of Thought), and followed by "Repentance" (from the album Systematic Chaos). The end of the song contains a theme from "Octavarium." As compared to the other three installments in the AA suite, "The Root of All Evil" is the shortest in length: just over 8 minutes; the other installments are all in excess of ten minutes.
