[edit] Premise
The Proud Family is a sitcom based on semi-dramatic situations that revolve around the main character, 14-year old Penny Proud and her family and friends.
[edit] Production
The Proud Family was created by Bruce W. Smith and was produced by his studio, Jambalaya Studios. Originally piloted for Nickelodeon [1], it was eventually picked up by the Disney Channel in 2001. Many of the later episodes of The Proud Family were produced using Macromedia Flash. LaCienega and Sunset Boulavardez are puns for La Cienega Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard, actual streets in Los Angeles and the school that Penny Proud and her friends go to is named for auto racing driver Willy T. Ribbs, who was the first African American to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. It was first broadcast in the United States on The Disney Channel on September 15, 2001, and now also airs on Toon Disney. It has also been broadcast on The Family Channel in Canada.
- The theme song is performed by Destiny's Child and Solange Knowles.
[edit] Characters
- Penny Proud
Voiced by Kyla Pratt, the 14-year-old main character is usually embarrassed by the way her parents act. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, even though they have gotten her into trouble, and left her to face danger by herself many times. She listens to and respects her parents, but often caves in to peer pressure. When Penny gets in trouble she sets a bad example for BeBe and CeCe. She is also somewhat of a feminist at times, and is very logical.
- Oscar Proud
Voiced by Tommy Davidson, Penny's over-protective father who some may call a born loser; he is the longtime rival of mogul Wizard Kelly, and is the owner of Proud Snacks (which makes anybody who eats them sick except Peabo, who is the only person who likes them). Oscar Proud is unique in that he of all the other characters in the show exhibits the most overt signs of being a Toon; his body responds to over-the-top physical reactions by squishing flat as a pancake, burning into a puff of ashes, stretching thin as a rubber band, glowing x-ray skeleton style, etc. Penny shows early signs of this as well, and Suga Mama repeatedly makes reference to Penny "taking after her daddy". Although he isn't very physically attractive, Oscar's sense of humor often attracts gorgeous women. He has never actually cheated on his wife, but is easily seduced and will do anything that a beautiful woman asks him to.
- Trudy Proud
Voiced by Paula Jai Parker, Penny's ambitious, loving and rational mother is respectful of others and works as a veterinarian. Since she makes more money than Oscar[dubious ], she asserts dominance over him at times, especially when she catches him flirting with other women.
- BeBe & CeCe Proud/Puff the Dog
Voiced by Tara Strong, Penny's trouble-making 1-year-old twin little siblings often torture Sugar Mama's pet poodle. BeBe's a boy with huge afro, while Cece's a girl with brown hair put in pigtails.
- Suga Mama Proud
Voiced by Jo Marie Payton, Penny's hip, wrestling-loving grandma who does Tae-bo. She is very sassy, and always gets straight to the point when she talks. She constantly insults, discourages and beats-up Oscar, but she loves him deep down.
- Dijonay Jones
Voiced by Karen Malina White, Penny's somewhat eccentric best friend is eccentric and backstabbing but hilarious & honest; she has mustard-yellow hair and is in love with Sticky Webb. Dijonay is loud and she's always getting Penny into trouble. She's very similar to Kim Parker (The Parkers) in appearance and personality
- Sticky Webb
Voiced by Orlando Brown, Penny's friend and Dijonay's love interest, though he dislikes her rather strong come-ons.Though he does have feelings for her, and only let those show once in one episode. He is very intellegent and somewhat of a computer geek.
- Zoey Howzer
Voiced by Soleil Moon Frye, Penny's nerdy friend. Zoey has red hair ,braces, and freckles. She usually shows low self esteem at times, and always tries to show others that she's not all nerd.
- Lacienega Boulevardez
Voiced by Alisa Reyes, Penny's on again/off again friend. She's Hispanic and is extremely rude to Penny (but makes sure the adults don't know that). There is no reference to it within the show itself, but Lacienega and her mother Sunset share their names with actual streets in Los Angeles, California.
- Michael
Voiced by Phil LaMarr,Penny's feminine friend, and is a good fashion designer and basketball player.
[edit] Other Characters
- Felix & Sunset Boulevardez
Voiced by Carlos Mencia, and Maria Canals. Oscar & Trudy's friends, whose father Papi is the somewhat-unwilling boyfriend to Suga Mama, and whose daughter Lacienega is the even-more unwilling friend to Penny. Sunset has a very sexy physique, and often wears tight outfits, while Felix is short and fat. When they first moved into the neighborhood, Oscar attention was drawn right away to Sunset's gorgeous body, until he saw Felix's TV. Felix also shares Oscar's weakness for gorgeous women, as they share a catch phrase whenever they see one: "YEH YEH!". The name Felix, together with Oscar Proud, makes reference to the Odd Couple of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison; Sunset, and her daughter Lacienega, both share their names with actual streets in Los Angeles CA.
- Papi
Voiced by Alvaro Guttieriez, the elderly boyfriend of Suga Mama dresses like The Joker from Batman. He constantly makes jokes about Suga Mama in Spanish and then laughs at the top of his lungs; his accent titillates Suga Mama, although whether she understands the context of his words or not is unclear.
- Wizard Kelly
Voiced by Aries Spears, Oscar Proud's successful & life-long rival who made his fortune on a basketball shot that Oscar missed back in high-school; he now owns nearly everything (or so it seems). It is implied that Wizard Kelly is a pun for Magic Johnson. The name of the town that the Proud Family lives in is Wizville CA, which is shown when Penny gets her drivers license in The Proud Family Movie. A running gag of the series is that he doesn't remember the names of the main characters, no matter how many times they tell him (eg:he always calls Zoey "Susie"). Wizard Kelly's face is never shown in any of the episodes. Instead, the shot is awkwardly angled so that he can only be seen from the neck down.
- Peabo
Voiced by Cree Summer, An annoying 7 year old who always makes trouble for Oscar, he also as a crush on Penny. Despite his age he is very smart.
