The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a faux documentary horror film to be released in 2008.[1] Most of the filming was done in upstate New York. The film was directed by John Dowdle, and produced by Brothers Dowdle Productions. The brothers, originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, cast Minneapolis-St. Paul station KSTP-TV news anchors in the film's news scenes.[2] The main protagonist is played by Stacy Chbosky, the director's wife.[1]

The film was originally screened at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 27, 2007[3][4] This film has been rated R by the MPAA for "sadistic horror violence/gore, disturbing images, and descriptions."

The plot revolves around a serial killer terrorizing Poughkeepsie, New York. Dowdle has said that the film's villain is based upon real serial killers including Ted Bundy, Ed Kemper, and Gary Ridgway.
