The Evolution of Robin Thicke is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Robin Thicke, released by Star Trak/Interscope records on October 3, 2006 (see 2006 in music). The album was re-released as a Deluxe Edition on February 13, 2007, and included three new bonus tracks.[1] By the time of the album's original release it had spawned two singles, the urban hit "Wanna Love U Girl" and the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs number-one hit "Lost Without U". "Everything I Can't Have" is a big fan favorite, due to its Latin flavor. So far, the album has sold approximately 1.4 million copies[2], and according to the RIAA the album has now reached platinum status in America.

[edit] History

[edit] Chart performance

The album debuted at #45 on the U.S. Billboard 200 in October 2006 selling about 20,000 copies in its first week during the album's original release. The first single, "Wanna Love U Girl", featured producer Pharrell and was released a full year prior to the release of the album on August 9, 2005.[3] The single experienced chart success on urban radio in the United Kingdom and a remix version of the song was recorded with rapper Busta Rhymes.

The album's second single, the ballad "Lost Without U" began getting a lot of radio airplay in Urban & Rhythmic stations in late 2006 and early 2007. The song has reached as high as #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. [4] As a result, Thicke became the first white male artist since George Michael to top the R&B singles chart.

Currently the album has reached a peaked position of #5 on the Billboard 200, and #1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[5] It is the first R&B #1 album of Thicke's career. From February 24, 2007 to March 3, 2007 the single "Lost Without U" and album The Evolution of Robin Thicke simultaneously spent 2 consecutive weeks at #1 on the R&B singles and albums charts respectively. On the March 3, 2007 issue of Billboard magazine, Thicke simultaneously topped 4 Billboard charts; Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and Hot Adult R&B Airplay.

Due to the popularity of "Lost Without U", sales of the album started to increase. By late March of 2007, The Evolution of Robin Thicke was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Thicke and his record label Interscope soon considered potential tracks to be released as the album's next and third single. Thicke's preference was the track "Can U Believe", which has since peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and at #99 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. [6] On October 2, 2007 "Got 2 Be Down" was released to radio airplay as the official fourth single.

[edit] Television Uses

Three of the album's songs have appeared on General Hospital, including "Angels", used on November 22, 2006 during Luke and Laura's goodbye; "Shooter", which was used during Jason and Sonny's shootout April 12, and April 13, 2007; and "Lost Without U", on October 2, 2007 during a love scene between Sonny and Kate.[7]
