Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project is the third video game iteration in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991.

The game was released in Japan as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Manhattan Project (ティーンエージ・ミュータント・ニンジャ・タートルズ2 ザ・マンハッタ・ブロゾェク Tīn'ēji Myūtanto Ninja Tātoruzu Tsū Za Manhatta Purojeku?) due to the fact that the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game for the Famicom had its title changed for its Japanese release, affecting the numbering of its two sequels. No PAL version was released, although this did not affect the numbering of the subsequent game in the series (Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles IV for the SNES).

[edit] Plot

Title screen
Title screen

The Turtles are vacationing at a beach in sunny Key West, Florida when they turn on their travel TV to see April's latest remote news report. As April reports on the escalating crime statistics, the network's signal goes out. Suddenly Shredder appears on screen with a message directed at the turtles themselves. He raises the entire island of Manhattan skyward and takes April as hostage. Seeing this, the turtles take action and cut their vacation short. As now they must return home, rescue April, and put Manhattan back to sea level.

[edit] Gameplay

This game, like the previous turtles game, is a scrolling fighting game. It can be played by one or two players. The 2 player game has 2 modes of play that labeled A and B. In mode A the players can hurt each other, while in mode B they cannot. In the game, the players move forward, fighting Shredder's minions. When the player loses a life, they can switch characters before continuing. If a player has lost all their life reserves they can make a comeback by stealing one of the other player's life reserves.

[edit] Special attacks

The keystone of the game are new special attacks that are unique to each turtle. These attacks can deal out serious amounts of damage to an opponent, but will cost a player one health point until he has one health point left. These attacks are as follows:

Turtle Attack Inspiration
Leonardo Cyclone Sword Spin From Splinter's advice that the best defense is a sharp offense.
Michaelangelo Kangaroo Kick From comments made by the other turtles regarding his smelly feet.
Donatello Knockout Roll From a late night "Bowling for Pizza" party.
Raphael Power Drill Attack From the conscious decision to start using his head.

[edit] Levels

The game features 8 different scenes. Each scene contains one to three distinct parts and one or more bosses. Three of the bosses used in the game come from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. As follows are the levels as they were listed in level select in the secret "Teenage Mutant Ninja Options" screen.

[edit] Bosses

The bosses come mostly from the 1987 cartoon show, and include Dirtbag, Groundchuck, Slash, and Leatherhead, as well as Tokka and Rahzar (from the second TMNT movie), and of course, Rocksteady, Bebop, Krang, and Shredder. Triceraton appears on the box, but is not actually in the game.

Groundchuck Groundchuck will start off charging back and forth. Later he will rip out a piece of nearby pipe to use as a bat.
Slash Slash will move about swinging his Katana. He will then he will lay down on his back and go into a spin and move all around.

Super Shredder Super Shredder will fire bolts of plasma into the air that fall to the ground and run across the screen. He will be plagued with hickups that randomly teleport him. He will also fire a a blast that will regress the player into an ordinary turtle for a short period.

[edit] Trivia

  • Despite appearing on the box-art, Triceraton do not appear in the actual game.
  • Out of all the closing credits, director Kuuneru Asobu is the only one who's credit appears in Japanese hiragana, くうねるあそぶ.
  • The game misspells Rahzar's name as "Rahzer".
  • When the game was reviewed on the short lived syndicated TV series GamePro TV, host J. D. Roth stated that the turtles were vacationing in Miami.
