Talk:The Pretender (TV series)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You know what I always wonder? If Jarod was so smart, why is it that everytime he comes face to face with a sweeper, does he act like a wimp. All that learning, and never learning any martial arts or close combat hand-to-hand defensive tactics? He just does not put up a fight at all. Also, when Miss Parker and the sweepers go around to get him, doesn't anyone ever bother to check their credentials, especially law enforcement personnel or say if they were searching for him in a hospital, shouldn't security investigate who these people are that are after him? Just my two cents... therearenospoons 13:52, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't say is running from a sweeper marked him as a wimp. Rather, it's smarter for him to run than to fight. Even learning martial arts, there would always be a chance the sweeper might be more proficent or just plain get lucky and take him down. Not to mention fighting is going to take up valuable time. Even a few seconds would be time Jarod might not be able to spare as he could not be absolutely certain that in that time more sweepers, or Miss Parker, would be able to close in and catch him. Fighting also carries with it another risk for Jarod. That being getting injured. Even if he were to win the fight and get away before the sweeper could get help, and injury might slow him down enough that he couldn't just disappear or out run pursuit. Thus while there is a chance of someone being able to out run him, running still offers him a better chance to escape capture.

[edit] Bobby Bowman
Where did you heard about that Mr Lyle was nicknamed "Bobby Bowman" ? Lvr 10:46, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't edit it, but his nickname isn't bobby bowman, that's who he previously 'was' before he showed up as Mr. Lyle: Season two, Episode Crash. --ImmortalGoddezz 13:06, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- In fact, Bobby Bowman is Mr. Lyle's real name. He was adopted and raised by the Bowman family. Lyle was actually his father's name. His father used to lock him in the shed when he was young. One day, Bobby, or Mr. Lyle, killed his best friend, cut off his head, and faked his death using that body. He set up his father, Lyle, for the murder, who was sent to prison. Evito
- What about adding an entry in the article for Mr. Lyle with these informations ? Lvr 14:48, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've been working on those character profiles, but I've been too lazy to finish them. Maybe soon? Also two questions; is it OK to give away spoilers? And Another do I manually need to type my username and the date/time everytime I make an addition to this page, or is there some shortcut to it? Evito
- There is indeed a shortcut : type ~~~~ and when you Save, it will be change into your userid and timestamp, like what you can see here: Lvr 10:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chart?
As someone who never saw this show, I'm utterly lost when trying to read the chart seen on this page. Can someone explain what it means, and also re-work it so that newcomers would actually be able to read and understand it? "2001" "IotH"? These things need explanations.
Pbones 01:30, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- You're right. I didn't do the chart but even I, as an avid fan, didn't get what IotH was for a few minutes. I will try to clarify this chart. --ImmortalGoddezz 01:56, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, edited. Should be easier to understand now. Hope it looks better. --ImmortalGoddezz 02:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Hello. Guess who I am. Brian Wilson 01:13, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Sorry if the chart was confusing. As a fan, it made sense to me :) --CDaly CDaly
[edit] Serial impostor? POV
I am going to remove the sentence "Inspired by serial impostors such as Ferdinand Waldo Demara", becouse it is an unsourced detail, and POV, unless you can prove that the authors have mentioned this issue in an interview. Brian W 20:05, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- A source can be found here. It's on the website of Patrick Bauchau, the actor playing Sydney, which is definitely an authoritative source, stating directly that "[Steven Long] mentioned that the initial inspiration was the life of Ferdinand Demara, a man who actually had been able to practice medicine and do other things without having been trained for them." It wouldn't even be POV to mention that Jarod bears some resemblance to Ferdinand Waldo Demara in method and ability, if not motives and morality. --TexasDex 22:09, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Demara Discussion
This is a discussion that belongs on The Pretender (TV series) talk page not on user pages. Copying from User talk:ImmortalGoddezz and User talk:Brian G. Wilson for reference.
Why do you insist? Jarod is not an imposter, he is a genius, a hero and a humanitarian. the person that you are linking was the opposite. Brian W 20:24, 3 June 2006 (UTC).
- Wikipedia has a policy of NPOV, I am not saying that Jarod is not any of these things, but the reference has been drawn between Jarod and Ferdinand Waldo Demara and I don't see any reason to take it out. It doesn't matter that they might not share the same ideals but one can draw a strong conclusion that whoever developed the Pretender series was influenced by Demara's story. Which is why I added the see also section. Taking it out would only bias the article which is not what wikipedia is for. Hope this makes sense. --ImmortalGoddezz 20:39, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- Your edit is POV. The two authors of the story have never mentioned Damara. The main theme of the series is not "Jarod pretending to be someone else". Jarod was kidnapped, Mr D. not. Jarod fights against evil, D. not. Jarod is firstly trained as a scientist, that eventually becomes capable to apply his knowledge in cognitive science and psychology in order to emulate several human, social, scientific and technological contexts, in other words he's a sort of emulator. I'll remove your link, unless you are able to put some proper information to justify it... Brian W 21:00, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you think my edit is POV, let me explain it in this sense. Jarod and Mr. Demara both have the ability to pick up traits, skills, etc. just by reading about them. In that sense they are extremely similar. It has been implied throughout the series that even without Centre interference Jarod would have these abilities, though not as honed and skillful. Yes perhaps Jarod can only be considered an emulator, but looking at this the similarities between the two are enough to have others drawing the same conclusions, and they are both unique this way. I also do not believe that they are the same fundamentally which is why I did not reinstate it into the article but put it in a See also section. Which, as far as I know, is an appropriate place to put something that is similar to the article but not quite the same. I believe that this is an appropriate place for this reference. I certainly don't want to squabble over something as simple as this though, if you feel that it has no relation to the article I believe an admin can be informed of the controversy and let him or her resolve it. Also I believe this article would be of great interest to you. http://www.visimag.com/xpose/xs06_feature.htm --ImmortalGoddezz 21:16, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- That webpage could have been created just today, it's not a valid reference, sorry. Anyway I found interesting the story of that Mr D., so, could you find a proper sentence to put near that link? Or maybe a quote among "trivia" that could state something like for a similarly skilled character see D.'s story at....a non-fictional man that used his skills for opposite aims" .. . Brian W 21:29, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- That webpage is absolutely a valid source. It's essentially an online equivalent of a magazine, and while it's perhaps less authoratative than TIME it could not have been "created just today" for the purposes of proving you wrong. Archive.org has versions going back to 1998[1]. You need to calm down about this, it's not intended to besmirch the reputation of Jarod, it's a simple fact that such people have existed in real life, and that they got the idea from them. The rest of the article is already gushing about how wonderful Jarod is, which is not only NPOV but kind of annoying. --TexasDex 23:00, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

List of The Pretender episodes
Feel free to contribute to the summaries. I'm still in the process of getting screenies. -therearenospoons 06:32, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Characters
The character sections has a few problems. To start with it's incomplete, it's missing some of the major characters of this television show. The characters that are covered are littered with weasel words, and shows original research (ex. Jarod is a composed man, but sometimes his tortured soul gets the best of him. On two occasions, he could just stop himself from seeking freedom from his pain in beating the abductor of a child. At the end of an episode, Jarod is often seen crying, or walking a lonely street in sorrow.) which violates the NPOV policy that wiki holds. I believe the 'back story' section covers the series pretty adequately (though if necessary it could be expanded), and I don't believe the Characters section really needs to remain. If nobody objects to this I'm going to delete it in a week. If you do have problems with it please let me know beforehand. --ImmortalGoddezz 18:56, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- I removed the section as there is no objection. If you do have an objection/comment/thought please post it here before reinstating the characters section. Thank You. --ImmortalGoddezz 13:22, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My thoughts
I'm a rather recent fan of this series, and I've been (very late-night) thinking:
- Perhaps there needs to be a real Jarod article- somehow a short summary about him in the main article and character section seems inadequate, especially since ever single one of the Pokemon have an article and he does not.
- The chart about how many episodes each character has been in is weird. It's really only served to make me wonder why "Kyle" is not mentioned and killing me as to why Brigitte's last name is Parker (I have only seen through the third season's fourth episode as of right now). =P Obviously someone's worked hard figuring it all out, but what is the point?
- The List of The Pretender (TV series) characters seems odd that there's only a few characters in it. Anyway, it'd be nice if we could get links for the characters' names going to specific lines in the character article rather than to the actors' or the main one. I'm thinking maybe one article for the main/recurring characters with longer bios, and then a separate article for the minor characters who are only in one episode (with the current TOC template there).
- The Trivia section on the main article needs work- it looks like a giant block of text, and therefore my eyes desperately want to avoid it. It needs some clipping up and wiki-links added.
- I think "Synopsis" and "Back story" should be combined into a "Plot."
There's a few other things as well, but I cannot think of them. It's a definite I'll be doing a lot of this stuff myself, but if there are any other thoughts or concerns, I'd like to hear them. Also, for the record, because I haven't yet been through all that's available, it's reasonable to expect some of what I do could be inaccurate- it's why I've been working on the episodes list but haven't gotten very far (I've been trying to wikilink as accurately as possible and that's difficult if I don't know what's happened yet!). If something's awry, feel completely free to fix it and I'll try not to wonder too much! -- Sarrandúin [ Talk + Contribs ] 07:54, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
I feel that I truly liked the show and I feel that they should bring it back on or at least let Miss Parker and Jarod settle down with each other and get Married to one another. Or have him work at a fastfood restaurant, like 'Burger King, or Mcdonalds. Or have it that he finally finds his mom. I feel that the series should make a come back. Nancy
[edit] Crossing Jordan?
Was Jarod the brother of Jordan from Crossing Jordan? I seem to recall a connection. --Sharkface217 21:59, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- Weiss (who plays Jarod) played the brother of Jordan in that TV series however there's no connection between the two series besides the fact that Weiss played in both of them. --ImmortalGoddezz 22:02, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Centralized TV Episode Discussion
Over the past months, TV episodes have been redirected by (to name a couple) TTN, Eusebeus and others. No centralized discussion has taken place, so I'm asking everyone who has been involved in this issue to voice their opinions here in this centralized spot, be they pro or anti. Discussion is here [2]. Even if you have not, other opinions are needed because this issue is affecting all TV episodes in Wikipedia. --Maniwar (talk) 03:21, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Miss Parker's First Name
If I recall correctly, at the very end of the episode before the credits rolled, "Till Death Do Us Part," a voice-over by Thomas Gates actually speaks Miss Parker's first name. Am I imagining or is this the case? maclilus (talk) 21:55, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Image:Pretenderpromo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
