Tarrafal is a municipality located in the northern part of the island of Santiago in Sotavento in Cape Verde. The municipal population is around 18,000, the area is 112.4 km² and the density is about 160/km². Tarrafal is located 75 km NNW of Cape Verde's capital, Praia.

Tarrafal is linked with a road connecting it to Assomada and to Praia. There is a small road to the northern point of the island of Santiago. Farmlands are situated in the northern and the valley areas. The mountains including the Serra da Malagueta ranges cover the southern part. Grasslands and bushes cover the rest of the area along with a couple of forests.

Under Salazar the concentration camp Tarrafal was built where opponents of the regime were sent.

The economy includes businesses, agriculture, fishing and tourism. Most of the population is rural. The urban population is concentrated in the town of Tarrafal.

Tarrafal is also the name of the town that constitutes the seat of the Tarrafal Municipality.

Tarrafal has a few schools or collegiates (colegio), a few lyceums (middle schools), a gymnasium (secondary schools), churches, beaches, ports, a post office and squares (praças).
