Tacuarembó, is a town in north-central Uruguay, in the Tacuarembó Department. The population is 51,224 (2004 census).
It is near Tacuarembó where national hero José Artigas suffered his final defeat against the Portugese/Brazilians in his long struggle for independence.
It is alleged that Tango legend Carlos Gardel, as well as the famous jockey Irineo Leguisamo, were born near this town, in Valle Edén, and not in Toulouse, France.
