Tabatabaei is the family name of a branch of Sayyid,descendants of Islamic prophet Muhammad through Hassan ibn Ali, the second imam of Shi'as, populated mostly in Iran, but also in Iraq and Lebanon.

- Allameh Seyyed Muhammad Husayn Tabatabaei is the most notable person of this family who was one of the most prominent thinkers of contemporary Islam.
- Javad Tabatabaei is an Iranian political philosopher, historian and a distinguished university professor.
- Sayyed Mohammad Tabataba'i one of the religious leaders of Iranian Constitutional Revolution
- Seyyed Zia'eddin Tabatabaee was an Iranian politician and the Prime Minister of Iran(Persia) from February to May 1921 under Ahmad Shah, the last Shah of the Qajar dynasty.
- Ghulam Husain Tabatabai author and historian, spent most of his life in the midst of the political vicissitudes during the Mughal Empire.
