The Sunwapta River is a major tributary of the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada.

[edit] Course

The Sunwapta River originates near the Columbia Icefield, as a small stream flowing from Sunwapta Lake, at the toe of the Athabasca Glacier. It runs to the northern edge of Banff National Park, following the Icefields Parkway for much of its course. It joins the Athabasca River after Sunwapta Falls.[1]

Sunwapta is a Stoney Indian word meaning "turbulent river." Geologist A. P. Coleman named the river in 1892.[2]
