Stephanus van Cortlandt (May 7, 1643 - November 25, 1700) was the first native born mayor of New York (1677-1678; 1686-1688). His wife was Gertruj Van Schuyler sister of Pieter Schuyler. (A brother Jacobus Van Cortlandt also served as mayor of New York). He was the patroon of Cortlandt Manor.
He was on the governor's executive council from 1691 to 1700.

- His sister Maria married Jeremias Van Rensselaer.
- His sister Catherine married Frederick Philipse, the first Lord of Philipsborough (or Philipsburgh) Manor. These were the great grandparents of Susannah Philipse, the wife of Loyalist Colonel Beverley Robinson. {Beverley Robinson was a first cousin once removed to Carter Braxton's first wife Judith Robinson and was also a cousin to Christopher Robinson (1763-98). A son of Beverley Robinson named Sir William Henry Robinson was married to Catherine, daughter of Cortlandt Skinner. A sister of Beverely Robinson's wife was Mary Philipse-daughter of Speaker of New York Assembly Frederick Philipse II. Mary Philipse married to Loyalist Captain Roger Morris}
- His daughter Anne married Stephen DeLancey. They were the parents of New York Governor James DeLancey and Oliver DeLancey {the elder}. The elder Oliver's children was his daughter Charlotte was married to David Dundas C-in-c of the British Army-and his son-Oliver Delancey {the younger} was a General in the British Army and a Member of Parliement. Oliver's brother-in-law was Loyalist Colonel John Henry Cruger, grandson of New York Mayor John Cruger, whose wife was an aunt of the wife of Albany New York Mayor Dirck Wesselse Ten Broeck.
- His brother Jacobus married Eva De Vries Philipse, adopted daughter of Frederick Philipse
- Two grandsons were Lt. General William Skinner and his brother Loyalist General Cortlandt Skinner. {Also Cortlandt Skinner was father in law to General Sir William Henry Robinson {See preceding entry} and Field Marshal Sir George Nugent}.
- One granddaughter Margaret Kemble was the wife of Thomas Gage; their son Henry Gage, 3rd Viscount Gage would marry his cousin Susanna Maria Skinner. {See below}
- One great-granddaughter Susanna Maria Skinner was the daughter of William Skinner.
- One great-granddaughter Mary Watts was the wife of John Johnson (Loyalist).
- One great-granddaughter Alice Delancey was the wife of Congressman Ralph Izard.
- One great-grandson was Philip Van Cortlandt son of Pierre Van Cortlandt and Joanna Livingston. A brother of Philip Van Cortlandt was named Pierre Van Cortlandt, Jr. whose first wife was Catherine, daughter of New York Governor George Clinton. A brother of Catherine was George Clinton (congressman), a son in law of New York congressman William Floyd. A sister of Catherine was Maria Clinton who married Stephen D. Beekman-grandson of Pierre Van Cortlandt and Joanna Livingston}.
- One great-grandson was Stephen Van Rensselaer II who married to Catherina daughter of Congressman Philip Livingston. Their son Stephen Van Rensselaer III was married to Margaretia daughter of General Philip Schuyler.
- One Great-nephew was John Jay who married Sarah daughter of New Jersey Governor William Livingston.
- A niece of Stephanus and also an aunt of John Jay was Margareta Van Cortlandt married to Abraham De Peyster; they were the grandparents of loyalist{also named} Abraham De Peyster {1753-1799} who was married to Catherine Augusta Livingston-daughter of John Livingston the son of Philip Livingston (1686-1749); a brother-in-law of Margareta was Pierre Guillaome De Peyster married to Catherine Schuyler-a niece of Mayor of Albany Pieter Schuyler. Pierre and Catherine were parents of loyalist Arent Schuyler De Peyster. Pierre and Abraham were sons of Mayor of New York Abraham De Peyster & nephews of Mayor of Albany [Johanness De Peyster III Of Albany]. Abraham and Johannes were sons of Mayor of New York Johanness De Peyster II(1666-1719). New York Mayor Abraham De Peyster's great-grandson was General John Watts de Peyster father of General John Watts de Peyster Jr.. The John de Peysters father and son were cousins to General Philip Kearny.
What ever happend to the Van Cortlandt family the world may never know. But I do know is that it si not fair that their house was made a meuseum rather than it staying in the family or that their large estae was made into a park where hideous savages hang out if it were my esate it would have stayed in the family.
