[edit] Athletics
Southwest Guilford High School has won state championships in sports such as tennis, soccer, golf, volleyball, and baseball. Their most recent state championship was their girls volleyball team in the 2006 season. The Athletics Director of Southwest Guilford is Brindon Christman. Commentating for Southwest athletics games is the "voice of the Cowboys," Tom Parker.
The school's football team has had a losing record every year except for 1980, 1996, and 2006. Prior to the 2003 season, the football team had lost 34 out of the last 35 games and had the longest losing streak in the state with 18 consecutive losses. According to local media, the team went 0-11 in 2002 and would have forfeited all ten due to the use of several ineligible players that season. The football program had only won a combined six games in the four prior years.
The team under coach Bryan Davis improved each season from 2003-2006. The newly found enthusiasm created an environment of competitive football that opened the door for seven young men from 2004-2006 to obtain full college scholarships. During those regular seasons the 2003 team was 2-9, the 2004 team was 4-7 (trip to the state playoffs), the 2005 team was 5-6 (trip to the state playoffs), and the 2006 team was 6-5 (trip to the state playoffs). Scott Schwarzer is the current coach.
