The Southern Football League Premier Division (British Gas) is a football league covering central and south western England. Since the 2004-05 season, it has been at step 3 of the National League System, and the 7th tier overall in the English football league system.
At the end of each season, the winners of the Premier Division (Salisbury City in 2006) are promoted to either Conference North or Conference South, together with the winners of a series of playoffs between the 2nd to 5th placed teams (Bedford Town in 2006). The bottom 4 clubs are relegated to step 4, probably either the Southern Football League Division One South & West or Division One Midlands. (In 2006, the 4th-from-bottom team was granted a reprieve due to the re-organisation of leagues at level 7).
The division is at the same level as the Northern Premier League Premier Division and the Isthmian League Premier Division.
