[edit] History

The institution was originally founded in 1899 as Draughon's Practical Business College by John Draughon,[1]. It operated under the name Draughon's Junior College until 1985, when the name South College was adopted to reflect its acquisition (in 1974) by the family of John T. South, III. The name was later changed to South University to reflect the institution's accreditation to award degrees at the masters and doctorate level.[2]
