South San Diego

South San Diego is a section of the City of San Diego extending into far southwestern San Diego County, United States. It is made up of the communities of Egger Highlands, Nestor, Ocean Crest, Otay Mesa, Otay Mesa West, San Ysidro and the Tijuana River Valley [1] .

Its boundaries are the city of Imperial Beach on the west, City of Chula Vista to the north, Donovan Correctional Facility to the east, and the Mexican border on the south. The Sweetwater Union High School District is the only high school district in the South Bay. There are many redevelopment projects taking place in South San Diego, including the redevelopment of 7th and 9th street on Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach. New to the area is the South Bay Expressway, a toll road that connects SR 905 in Otay Mesa to SR 125 in Spring Valley.

Brown Field Municipal Airport is located in the Otay Mesa region.

There are three cities adjacent to South San Diego:

National City is the oldest city in San Diego County behind San Diego, it was incorporated on September 19, 1887. Since 2005 it has had a population of 61,419.

Chula Vista is the 2nd most populated city in San Diego County, with an estimate of 230,000 in 2007. The new eastern neighborhoods in Chula Vista, have made it one of the fastest growing cities in the country. According to local census reports administered by SANDAG, the population of Chula Vista will reach 268,970 by 2020 - a 55 percent increase over the next 20 years (beginning in 2000).

Imperial Beach was incorporated in 1956.

The 2007 population of South San Diego was 105,463. The ethnic makeup is: Hispanic (68.1%), White (12.9%), Aisan/Pacific Islanders (11.7%), Black (4.6%) and Other (2.5%). The median household income varies by community. Otay Mesa/ Ocean Crest - $97,694. Nestor/Egger Highlands/Palm City - $54,776 San Ysidro - $32,800

The City of San Diego groups these neighborhoods into the larger sections. Otay Mesa, Otay Mesa West and Ocean Crest are combined as Otay Mesa. Nestor, Egger Highlands and Palm City are combined as Otay Mesa-Nestor. San Ysidro and Tijuana River Valley are not grouped.

There are 13 public elementary schools. Seven are part of the South Bay Unified School District and six are in the San Ysidro School District.

[edit] San Ysidro McDonald's massacre

On July 18, 1984, James Oliver Huberty, a 41-year old former welder from Canton, Ohio, committed a mass-murder of 21 people inside of a McDonalds restaurant in San Ysidro, California. The McDonalds site was razed in 1985. The site is now home to a Southwestern College satellite campus. [2]

John J. Montgomery achieved the first, controlled flight when he successfully flew his glider from "Wheeler Hill" on August 28, 1883. The site of his historic flight is known as Silver Wing Park (Part of Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center), located on Coronado Avenue, just east of Beyer Boulevard [3].
